F. H. LEHMAN. PUZZLE.
(No Model.)
UNiTED STATES PATENT FHCE,
FRANK II. LEHMAN, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,672, dated November 17, 1896.
Application filed March 16, 1896.
To all 2071 0771 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK II. LEl-IMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lebanon in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to puzzles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and the solution of which, though difficult, may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the device.
ihe invention is fully disclosed in the followingspecification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section on the line :0 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing, which consists of a bottom A and avertical post a at each corner thereof, and the sides and ends of the box or casing consist of wires I3, which are wound around the same and secured in position at predetermined points, so as to leave slots or openings or so as to provide open-work sides and ends. Said box or casing is also provided with a top, or cover D, which is provided at one end with a slot or openingcl, and extending from the outer end of said slotor opening downwardly and backwardly is a curved or inclined plate or partition G; which connects with a similarly-inclined plate or partition II, which extends from the rear upper portion of the box or casing downwardly and forwardly to the front thereof, and formed in the inner end of the downwardly and backwardly inclined plate or partition G is a reetangular opening or cut-away portion g. I also provide a ball or spherical body L, which is adapted to be inserted through the slot or opening d in the top or cover I), and the solution of the puzzle consists in manipulating the device so as to roll the ball or body L up the incline or curved partition II through the Serial No. 583,351. (No model.)
opening or cut-away portion 9 of the inclined plate or partition G onto said plate or partition G and upwardly and out. through the slot or opening (Z.
It will be observed that the inclined plates or partitions G and II are only about half as wide as the box or casing and are located centrally thereof, and the above-described solution is exceedingly difficnlt, but it may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the (le vice, and said solution is exceedingly interesting and entertaining.
My invention is not limited lo the method of constructing the box or casing herein described or to the size, width, and exact location of the partitions or plates G and II, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described. puzzle, which comprises a box or casing provided with a bottom, and with a top or cover having a slot or opening at one end thereof, a plate or partition which extends downwardly and backwardly, from said slot or opening, and which connects with a similar plate or partition which extends downwardly and forwardly, one corner of said first-named plate or partition being cut away, and a ball or spherical body which is adapted to be inserted through the slot or opening in the top or cover, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described puzzle, which co1n prises a box or casing provided with a bottom, and with a top or cover having a slot or opening at one end thereof, a plate or partition which extends downwardly and backwardly, from said slot or opening, and which connects with a similar plate or partition which extends downwardly and forwardly, one corner of said first-named plate or partition being cut away, and a ball or spherical body which is adapted to be inserted through the slot or opening in the top or cover, and each of said plates or partitions being curved or segmental in form, substantially as shown and described. 4
3. The herein-described puzzle, which com prises a box or casing provided with a bottom, and with a top or cover havinga slot or opening at one end thereof, a plate or partition which extends downwardly and backwardly, from said slot or opening, and which connects with a similar curved plate or partition which extends downwardly and forwardly, one corner of said first-named plate or partition being cut away, and a ball or spherical body Whichis adapted to be inserted through the slot or opening in the top 01' cover, and each of said plates or partitions being curved or segmental in form, and the sides, or the sides and ends of the box or casing being composed of open-work consisting of wires or similar devices, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have sign ed my name, in pres ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of March, 1896.
FRANK H. LEHMAN.
