SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,606, dated November 17, 1896.

Be it known that I, JAMES R; \VALSH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county Arapahoe and 5 State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turn-D own- Collar Shapers 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled re in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I 5 My invention relates to improvements in turu-down-collar shapers.
My object is to provide a simple and effective device of this class adapted to be heated by steam.
2c The invention consists of the features here ina-fter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in. which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

3 Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate an upright post or column mounted on a suitable support 6, to which it is made fast. This column is circular in cross-section,
3 5 its upper portion 5 being provided with a smooth or polished surface. On the lower portion 5 of the column is fulcruined at a suitable point 7 a bell-crank lever 8. To the upper arm 8 of this lever is attached a clamping-plate 9, arc-shaped in cross-section to cor respond with the adjacent surface of the column which it is adapted to engage. The lower arm 8 of the bell-crank lever is supported by a spring 10, attached to the base of 45 the column. This spring normally holds the clamping-plate 9 in contact with the polished surface of the column. As shown in the drawings, the spring 10 is double, or composed of two distinct parts. The free extremities of the spring parts project through a metal strap or guide-loop 8, made fast to the arm 8 of the lever 8. This arm 8 is also connected with a foot-lever 12 by means of a rod 13. The lever 12 is suitably fulcrumed at 14:. The bell-crank lever is further supported in its normal position by a spiral spring 15, whose lower extremity engages the support 0.
The column 5 is hollow, and its chamber 1 6 is connected with a pipe 17, leading from any suitable steam-supply source. The column is also provided with apipe 18, communicating with the chamber 16 and forming an outlet or escape for the water of condensation incident to the introduction of the steam-j et. The chamber 16 is otherwise closed. The intro duction of the steam jet is for the purpose of heating the column to the necessary degree for the performance of its function.
From the foregoing description of the de vice the operation of the mechanism will be readily understood. The lever 12 being pressed by the foot, the bell-crank lever is turned on its fulcrum and the clamping part 9 separated from the. part 5 of the column 5 sufficiently to permit the introduction of a 7 5 collar between the clamping-plate and the body of the column, the collar being wound around the column one or more times, according to the length of the same and the size of the column. I prefer to make the column about two and one-half inches in diameter. Hence a collar of ordinary length would be wound twice around the column. The lever 12 is then released, after which the clamping-plate is pressed tightly against the collar through the instrumentality of the springs 10 and 15 and the bell-crank lever. The collar is held in this position until it is pressed sufliciently to maintain its shape, when the foot-lever is again pressed and the collar released.
In practice one person attends to or uses two of the devices. While one device is shaping a collar he removes a collar from the other device and puts another collar in place. Hence no time is lost, since the user does not hold the collar in place during the shaping act.
The action of the device is entirely automatic after the collar has been placed in position and the foot-lever released, since the clamp 9 holds the collar securely in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a turn-doWn-collar shaper, the com bination with a suitable support, of the hollow upright column mounted on said support, the bell-crank lever i ulcrumed on the column, the clamping-plate attached to one arm of said lever, a spring engaging the lever and adapted to hold the clamping-plate against the column, suitable means for actuating the lever and separating the clamping-plate from the column, means for introducing steam to the chamber of the hollow column, and means for carrying away the Water of condensation, substantially as described.
2. In a turn-down-collar shaper, the combination with a suitable support, of the 1101- low upright column mounted on said support, the spring-supported bell-crank lever fulcrumed on the column, the clamping-plate attached to the lever and adapted to engage the column, a foot-lever, a suitable connection between the foot-lever and the bell-crank lever, and suitable means for heating the 1101- low column by introducing the heating medium into the chamber of the column, substantially as described.
In a turn-doWn-collar shaper, the combination with a suitable support, of the hol low upright column ciwcular in cross-section, said column being mounted on said support, a spring-supported bell-crank lever fulcrumed on the column, a clamping-plate attached to one arm of the lever, said plate being areshaped in cross-section to conform to the shape of the column, the foot-lever, a suitable connection between the foot-lever and the bell-crank lever, suitable means for introducing steam into the chamber of the hollow column, and means for carrying away the Water of condensation, substantially as described.
4. In a turn-doWn-collar shaper, the combination with a suitable support, of the hollow column mounted thereon, the spring-held bell-crank lever fulcrumed on a suitable support, the clamping device attached to said lever and normally engaging said column, and suitable means for heating the column, substantially as described.
