GEORGE P. KATU, JR., OF JERSEY CITY, NEW' JERSEY.
STAN D FOR LAM PS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,568, dated November 17, 1896.
Application filed March 30, 1896. Serial No. 585,327. (No model.)
To @ZZ wtont it indy con/cern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE l. KATU, J r., a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and `State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands for Lamps, of which the following is a specilica tion.
The invention relates to improvements in stands for lamps; and it consists, essentially, in a stand supporting the oil-fount and comprising a base, a statuette or ligure secured thereon and p rc ferabl y of bisque or analogous material, and a standard of special outline encompassing said figure except at its front and overhanging the top of same, the said standard forming a protecting bower for the 'Figure and a support for the lamp propel'.
Among the objects of my invention are to produce an attractive and new construction of lamp-stand as a new article of manufacture, and to provide means whereby in lampstands there may be successfully used without danger of breakage bright, attractive, and artistic figures of bisque or other fragile material.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central vert-ical section th rough a stand constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and illustrates by the dotted line 'lt-1 the section on which Fig. l is made.
In the drawings, A designates the base, B the bisque figure mounted thereon, and C the standard, which is secured upon the said base A, and upon its upper end supports the bowlshaped receiver D for the oil-fountof the lamp. The upper end of the standard C' is provided with the threaded hollow stud a., and the lower central. portion of the receiver D is provided with the internally-threaded sleeve Z1, which engages the said stud. The interior of the stud a is preferably threaded in orderto receive a screw, which will prevent the receiver D from becoming loose while in use. The side of the receiver D is provided with a screw d, by which the oil-fount of the lamp may be secured within said receiver.
The base A is circular and provided with a dat upper surface or platform e, upon the center of which the bisque figure B is firmly secured by means of the screw f and metal plug g,fittin g the hollow lower end or auxiliary base h of the ligure B. The base h, forming a part of the figure B, is hollow and the plug g is secured within it by means of the plaster-of-paris or cement fz', which is lirst, in a suitable layer, spread over the inner surface of the said base h to receive the plug g, and thereafter the bisque ligure containing the plug g is set upon a level surface in order that the plaster-of-paris or cement may dry andthe plug g be secured thereby in a proper position with respect to the platform e. The means shown for securing the plug g within the ligure B and the ligure I3 to the base A are such that the parts may be lirmly united without danger of fracturing the ligure. The screw f passes upward through an openingin the center of the platform e, and enters an internally-threaded hub j, which depends from the upper central portion of the plug g.
The standard C is in the outline of a circle in horizontal section, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and encompasses the bisque ligure D, except at the front of the latter, and the upper portion of the standard C curves forward and overhangs said ligure, as illustrated at E in Fig. l. The lower edge of the standard C follows the outline of the base A, as illustrated in Fig. i), and said standard is secured tothe base by means of a screw or screws E extending downward therefrom through the platform e and lug G, formed on said base, as shown in Fig. 1, said screw being retained in position by means of the nut H. The sides I J of the standard C pass around the sides of the figure B and about to the front of said gure, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and said sides extend upward and forward to the overhanging portion E of the top of said standard. The standard C protects the fragile figure B and at the same time enables the lamp to be freely handled, the hand being capable of being passed around the rear side of the standard C or of grasping the two opposite sides l J at the front of the standard without danger of crushing or breaking the ligure B. The oyerhanging top E of the standard C protects the ligure B from such fractures as might result IOO from the hand being dropped downward from the ylamp-bowl. 2 I prefer to forinfthe standard G in open-Work designs, as shown, in order to lighten the saine and yimpart to said standard a foliate appearance. not limited, however, to the foliate appearance of thefstandard CV nor to the special out line of figure B shown in the drawings'. 4The standard C enables me to use Iigures B of a highly artistic and fragile nature with Com-r parative safety, and hence the figure Bk in outline will constantly vary. Y
That I claim as my invention, andvdes're to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As a new article of manufaoturethe stand f eomprisin g' the .basemlle figure mounted therev on ,and the supperting-standardalso mounted on said base` and encompassing saidv figure.
exoept'at, itsfront and overhanging tlieitop f Comprising .thebase A, .the figure mounted' thereon, the supporting-standard also mounteden saidhase andeneompassing the back,
sidesandtop of said ligure, and the receiver The' invelzitiony is l D secured upon thetop of said standard; su bf-stantiallyas, and fonthe purposes set'forth.
As a new article of manufacture, the stand eomprisingthe base A, the ligure B mounted thereon and having secured within its lower yend the plug g to receive the fastening-screw. Vand the supportin g-standard C encompassing said figure B andr secured to said base along the outer edges of thelatter; substantially' as set forth'.
,theoverhanging portion E at the upper end of saidstanderd.; Y substantially as set forth.
Signed. atNeW York, inthe county ofy New yYorkand State of New-York, Vthis 27th dai` of March, A. D. 1896.
