UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TROTTER, JR., OF OYSTER BAY, NEW YORK.
COMBINED .MATCH-BOX AND CANDLESTICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,514, dated August 8, 1882,
Application filed January 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TROTTER, Jr., of Oyster Bay, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Match-Box and Candlestick, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed, including a match-box of circular form, mounted so that its axis will be in a horizontal plane, and having one or more openings in its periphery for the reception of matches, an open-top tray forming a support for the match-box and a receptacle for burnt matches, a luminous plate or tablet applied to the flat face of the match-box, and a candle holder or socket supported on the match-box, and beyond which the match-box projects laterally.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of a match-box and candlestick embodying my invention.
A designates the match-box, which is of circular form, with opposite flat sides. It may be made of paper, card-board, terra-cotta, or other ceramic ware, sheet metal or other material, and in its periphery is formed an openin g, a, for the reception of matches. The match-box may have a similar opening on each 1side, if desired, and each opening may have a B designates a base, upon which the matchbox is supported with its axis in a horizontal plane, and which may be formed of thin sheet metal like the base or bottoms of ordinary candlesticks, or of any other suitable material. This base may serve as a tray for the reception of burnt matches or other refuse, and it may be secured to the match-box A by a screw inserted through it from its under side.
The match-box A may have a luminous plate or tablet, 0, secured on its face by an ordinary bezel, b, and this plate or tablet may be of glass and have the phosphorescent paint or compound applied to its inner surface; or the said paint or compound may be applied to the match-box and covered and protected by a transparent glass plate or tablet.
When the match-box is made of terra-cotta or other ceramic ware the paint can be applied to its exterior and burned in, and the matchbox may have a roughened surface, as at 8, produced in any suitable way, upon which to strike matches.
D designates a holder or socket for a candle, which may be screwed or otherwise secured to the top of the match-box, and when attached thereto the match-box forms a body for a candlestick.
A candlestick might be formed with a body similar to the match-box, the openings a for matches being omitted, and in either case the match-box or body A might be provided with feet f, instead of the tray or base B.
It will be observed that the openings at are in the portion of the match-box which projects beyond the candle holder or socket.
When the match-box is not intended to serve as a body for a candlestick it may be provided at or near the top with a hole in the back, or a ring, whereby it may be suspended.
The base or tray B and the candle holder or socket D may be of bright sheet-brass, or they may be lacquered, and the match-box A may be decorated in any suitable manner.
By my invention I provide a very convenient article, because both the candlestick and match-box are made visible in the dark by a single luminous plate or tablet, and the article may be made soas to present a handsome appearance at a small cost.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The match-box A, of circular or analogous form, having one or more openings, at, the luminous plate or tablet (l and bezel b, and the circular tray B, on which said box is supported, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the match-box A, having one or more openings, a, a luminous plate or tablet, U, and bezel b, of the tray B, supporting said box, and the candle holder or socket D, supported upon said box, substantially as specified.
