SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,453, dated November 1'7, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Burns S. PICKETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to book-marks, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and efiective device which may quickly and easily be connected with a book when open and which is adapted to hold a book open at any desired point or to provide means whereby a book may be opened at any desired point or page, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of an open book, showing my improved book-mark connected therewith; and Fig. 2 a section through the central fold of the book.

In the practice of my invention I provide a book-mark which is composed of a piece of spring-wire, one end of which is flattened, as shown at A, and said wire is formed into a loop, the longer arm of which is corrugated or wave-shaped in form, as shown at B, and the end of said arm is provided with a ring or eye 0. This device is adapted to be connected with a book- B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the flat end or arm of the loop being passed beneath the back thereof and the longer wave-shaped arm B in this position resting in the fold of the book, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The ring or eye C at the end of the longer arm B serves as means by which the device may be handled or manipulated, and it will be understood that said device may be connected with the book at any desired point or may be used to separate any of the leaves thereof.

This book mark and holder is simple in construction and operation and comparatively in expensive, while being perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended. The spring-action thereof is such as to hold it in place at all times whether the book be open or closed, and it will not, therefore, come off or be disconnected from the book, and this feature is an important advantage over most of the book-marks now employed.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A book-mark, substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a loop-shaped piece of spring-wire or similar material, the short arm of which is flattened, and the longer arm having undulations or curves formed therein in a plane passing through the short arm, the extremity of the longer arm being provided with an eye or loop to manipulate the same, the shorter arm being adapted to pass beneath the back of the book, and the longer arm to mark the page, as and for the purpose set forth.
