such as illustrated in United States Patent No. 458,041, dated August 18, 1891, in which a grater is shown having a curved graterplate with which a nutmeg-holder coacts, the

latter having a transverse and a diagonal, as

well as a longitudinal, movement relative to the said plate.

The object of the invention is to provide a grater of the character referred to with such improvements that it may be easily formed of but few and simple parts, which may be bent or stamped into shape and secured together with a minimum of labor and at a low cost. To attain these ends, I have devised a nutmeg grater comprising a semicircular grater-plate, a nutmeg-holder, a socket for said holder, and a wire frame or carrier, all made in detached parts, which are joined together and become coacting in the manner to be hereinafter described, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, and in which-` Eigure 1 is a perspective View of thegrater. On the drawings, @represents a support or plate having guides or bearings b in alinement with the groove b', concentric with the semicircular grater-plate c, and in which is journaled the horizontal central portion of a wire frame, to be described. The said guides or bearings are formed in extended portions of the plate a, which are bent directly back upon said plate, as shown on the drawings. The wire frame or carrier eis formed of a single length of wire, having a straight central portion e', adapted to move longitudinally and to oscillate or rock in the bearings or guides b, and the ends or arms e2, bent upwardly and backwardly over the sem'icircular grater-plate and provided with curved end portions e3, collectively forming a clip or collar f, adapted to embrace and hold the socket g for the nutmeg-holder. Said socket is composed of sheet metal and has a curved face which lits over and is parallel with the semicircular grater-plate c. The said socket is also provided with an ear h, which engages vertical grooves or indentations t' on the eX- terior of the nutmeg-holder j, to be subsequently described, said grooves or indentations forming vertical ribs 7c on the interior of said holder. The aforesaid vertical ribs engage indent-ations in the springepressed follower Z and serve as guides therefor. The curved end portions e3, forming the cup or collar of the aforesaid wire frame, may be easily pulled apart for the insertion of the socket g, which may 'then be permanently secured therein by means of solder. This being done, the nutmeg-holder, formed of sheet metal bent to circular or elliptical form and provided with an opening m to retain the nutmeg, is inserted into the aforesaid socket and is likewise secured therein by means of solder.

The follower Z is provided with a vertical rod p, to which is attached a knob q, byineans of which the lsaid follower is raised for the reception of the nutmeg.

The spring n is composed of coiled wire, and hasone end pressing against the follower Z and the other against the top of the nutmegholder.

To provide a handle for my grater, I employ a rounded piece of wood r, provided with a small circular hole s, in which is forced a tang t, formed of a single length of wire bent together at its central point. The end portions of said wire are flattened and then bent outwardly and have the iiattened portion soldered to the lower face of the plate a. In the IOO the former vone are clearly evident. The frame or carrier is composed of a single length of wire, as before stated, which is easily bent to the form desired. The socket and the nutmeg-holder are also made of separate pieces of thin sheet metal. The collar of the frame, the socket, and the nutmeg-holder may all be soldered together to form a complete grater with all of its parts coacting.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A nutmeg-grater comprising a semicircular grater-plate having guides or bearings with which its grati n g-surface is substantially concentric, a wire frame or carrier composed of the straight central portion to move longitudinally and rock or oscillate in said bear ings, the arms bent outwardly from the ends of said central portion and backwardly over the exterior of the grater-plate, said arms terminating in the curved portions which coll-ectively form a clip or collar at the center of the frame, and a nutmeg-holder embraced by said clip and held thereby in position to cooperate with the grater-plate, as set forth.

2. A nutmeg-grater comprising a semicin cular grater-plate having guides or bearings with which its grating-surface is substantially concentric, a wire frame or carrier formed to move longitudinally and rock or oscillate in said bearings and having a central clip or collar located over the grater-plate, a sheetmetal socket embraced by and secured to said collar and having its lower edge formed to iit the curvature of the grater-plate, and a nutmeg-holder inserted in said socket and se cured thereto.

3. A nutmeg-grater comprising a semicircular grater-plate having guides or bearings with which its gratin g-surface is substantially concentric, a wire frame or carrier formed to move longitudinally and rock or oscillate in said bearings and having a central clip or collar located over the grater-plate, a sheetmetal socket embraced by and secured to said collar and having its lower edge formed to it the curvature of the grater-plate, said socket having an inwardly-proj ecting ear, a nutmegholder inserted in said socket and provided with a vertical indentation which forms a groove in the exterior of the holder to engage said ear and a rib on the interior of the holder, and a spring-pressed follower movable in the holder, and provided with a groove to receive said rib.
