SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,932, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed January 24, 1896. Serial No. 576,706. (No model.)

To (all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ASPERD. KIoUs, acitizen of theUnited States, residing at Momence, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pencil and Penholder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object that I have in view in my present invention is to provide a simple and cheap contrivance which can be slipped over a pencil or other suitable staff, and which shall be so constructed as to hold itself in place thereon and also grasp and retain a pen, said contrivance being capable of being moved endwise on the pencil or staff to a position where the pen will be projected beyond the pencil-point to enable the pen to be used for writing purposes, or the contrivance may be drawn back on the pencil or staff and have the pen lie close alongside the same, in order to afford a protection for the pen and prevent it from catching in the pocket.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in the construction of a holder, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

To enable others to understand my invention, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder with the pen and stafi removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing th e holder adjusted for service. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the holder, showing it withdrawn on the staff to protect the pen. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of my holder, in which is produced a slot for the purpose of having access to the heel of the pen to enable the same to be easily ejected from the holder.

Like letters of reference denote correspondin g parts in all the figures of the drawings.

A designates a suitable staff.

B is the slidable holder, and O is a pen to be carried by said holder 13.

The staff may be a lead-pencil, pointed, as shown, or it maybe an ordinary staff of wood or other material, such as a penholder-staff. Of course any suitable kind of pen C may be used.

My holder B is in the form of a convolute elas- 5 5 tie tube, having at one end aturned-up flange 1) to prevent ink from flowing along the tube and soiling the fingers of the writers hand when the device is in use. This holder B is made from a single blank or piece of sheet metal having a certain degree of elasticity and springiness, and said blank or piece of sheet metal is coiled upon itself one or more times to produce a convolute tube of appropriate length and diameter to enable it to 6 properly fit upon and clasp the staff A. The upturned flange Z) at one end of the convolute tube may be made on the blank before it is coiled, or said flange b may be produced at the end of the tube after it has been coiled by flaring the end of the tube slightly.

The construction of the convolute tubular holder enables it to grasp and retain the pen and to clasp itself upon the staff. The holder B can be slipped over the end of a pencil or other staff, and as it is eXpansible and 0011- tractible by reason of the material used and the mode of making it the holder operates to closely hug the staff by frictional contact,

whereby the tube holds itself in place on the staff and can be moved endwise any desired position.

It will readily be seen that the shank of the pen can easily be thrust between the overthereon to lapped or convolute portions of the holder at 8 5 of the convolute tube will be pressed closely together, and thereby grasp the pen more tightly.

To use the device for writing with ink, the convolute tubular holder B is moved endwise on the pencil or staff to a position whereby 5 the pen 0 is projected beyond the staff or pencilpoint. In this position the holder clasps the staff with sufficient force so as to remain in place and hold the pen O steadily to adapt the implement for service. \Vhen it '10s is not desired to use the pen, the holder B is drawn back on the staff far enough for the pen to lie close alongsidev the staff or pencil, in which position the points of the pen will be protected by the staff or pencil to prevent the pen from catching in the pocket. If the holder is used on apencil, it can be withdrawn far enough to prevent the holder and pen from interfering with the writer when the lead-pencil is used.

In the construction shown by Fig. -.t of the drawings 1 have illustrated the holder as provided with a slot f in the outer layer or coil. It is intended that the pen shall be inserted between the two layers or coils of the holder in a manner to expose the heel of the pen through the slot f, in order that access may be had to the heel of the pen for the purpose of pushing the pen out of the holder whenever desired, as, for instance, should the user desire to eject the pen before sliding the holder on the staff or pencil to bring the holder to a position Where it will be out of the Way.

Having thus fully described myinvention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for pencils, pen-staffs, or the like, con sisting of an elongated slidable holder bent or coiled from a single piece or blank of elastic sheet metal into a convol ute tube with overlapping side edges, forming a clasp to receive a pen at one end and adapted to hold itself in place upon a suitable staif, said tube or holder provided at the pen-receiving end with the angular lip or flange and further provided, at an intermediate point of its length, with a longitudinal slot, substantially as and for the purposes described.
