SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,679, dated November 3, 1896.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that we, PETER J. PAULY, S12, and JAMES C. MCQUILKIN, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in File- Racks, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through our improved rack. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing a horizontal partition inverted.

This invention relates toa new and useful improvement in file racks or cases, and more particularly to the manner of securing the horizontal and vertical partitions together.

Briefly stated, the invention consists in forming alining openings in the vertical partitions and offsets in the horizontal partitions, which offsets are in line with the openings in the vertical partitions, threading or passing straps through said openings and between the offsets and horizontal partitions, and securing the straps in position.

The vertical partitions A are of usual construction except for small openings, which are formed therein for the passage of the straps D.

The horizontal partitions C are formed with offset or depressed portions 0, through the openings formed by which are passed the straps D, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These ofisets are so located and are of such number as to efficiently support and hold the horizontal partitions in position. In this connection it might be well to say that the horizontal partitions fitting between the vertical partitions are prevented from moving laterally or longitudinally the straps by the vertical partitions.

The forward edges of the horizontal partitions are preferably formed with rebent portions and lips, as usual, and the rear edges are formed with depending flanges, to which the back B is secured, which adds rigidity to the entire structure.

In assembling our file-rack we preferably secure the vertical partitions to the top and bottom pieces and thread the straps through the horizontal partitions, which are arranged in horizontal rows to receive them. After the-straps are passed through the ends they are secured in some suitable manner, as by riveting. When the horizontal partitions are all in place,we place the back in position and preferably pass a single rivet through the depending flange of each horizontal partition and the back, which adds rigidity to the entire structure.

'We are aware that many minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combina tion of the several parts of our invention may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of our invention.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is

1. In a file-case, the combination with the vertical partitions, which are formed with alining openings, of horizontal partitions formed with offsets in line with the openings in the vertical partitions, straps which are threaded through said openings and between the offsets and horizontal partitions, and

means for securing the straps in position; substantially as described.

2. The combination with vertical partitions, of horizontal partitions arranged therebetween, said horizontal partitions being provided with offset or depressed portions, and straps which pass through the vertical partitions, under the horizontal partitions and over the offsets; substantially as described.

3. The combination with the vertical partitions A, formed with horizontally-alining openings, of horizontal partitions 0, formed with offset or recessed portions 0, and having single flanges at their backs, straps D which signatures, in presence of two Witnesses, this support the horizontal partitions'lby passing 13th day of April, 1896. through the openings in the vertical parti- V tions, and the openings formed by the offsets PETER J.
