SAMUEL J. VAN 'STAVOREN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO CHARLES F. VAN HORN, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-AXLE-EOX PEDESTAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,088, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filed February 8, 1894. Serial No. 499,563, (No model.)
To. all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL J. VAN STAVO- REN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Axle-Box Pedestals; and I do herebydeclare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
a My invention has relation to axle-box pedestals of the type wherein the component parts are made of wrought metal and riveted or otherwise secured together; and it has for its ob ect simplicity and economy of constructlon of the component parts of the pedestal whereby the same may be readily eco-.
noinically assembled and secured together. My invention accordingly consists ofthe combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying draw ings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of the front face of a form of. pedestal embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is an end v ew partly sectional, and Fig. 3 is an end view showing another form of a pedestal.
A represents the pedestal composed of a top U shaped plate B having vertical sides I) and bottom b made or out from a rolled metal channel bar or otherwise as desired. Its bottom and sides are provided with openings 1) having integral or separate thimbles I) through which pass the bolts for securing the pedestal to the truck upper chord or framing. O 0 represent the ways or guides for the axle-box which ways depend from the bottom of plate B and may consist of U shaped rolled metal plates suitably fashioned to provide parallel sides 0 a, transverse upper or top plate 0', and lower open ends 0 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
.The bottom of plate B and the top 0 of ways or guides c c are provided with registering openings for the passage of rivets or other fastening devices d for securing the top or guides G0- are connected by brackets H H which may consist of separate pieces of channel wrought metal or plates having edge flanges 72 and vertically and horizontally located, as shown more plainly inFig. 1. These brackets H H and the lower end'c 'of the In Fig. 3, the ways or guides O 0 have their Y parallel sides 0 c united at their lower ends 0 by an integral cross-bar or bracket, 0 while the'topc is cut as shown at c to provide inwardly extending flanges" c by means of which the Ways or guides are secured tothe bottom of the plate B. in a manner as above described;
' It is obvious that the details may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus for instance, the component parts of the pedestal instead of being riveted or analogously secured together, may be electrically welded.
. What I claim is Y 1. A wrought metal axle-box pedestal of a U shaped top plate having U shaped depending waysor guides secured to the under surface of the top-plate and brackets, and transverse brackets or bars secured to the parallel sides of the ways or guides, substan-. tially as set forth.
2. The combination of a wrought metal, U shaped top plate B having bolt openings in its top and sides and depending U shaped In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
