SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,595, dated November 3, 1896.

Application filed February 26, 1896. Serial No. 580,917. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSIAH J. DEAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohi0, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to toys, and more particularly to that class of inventions known to the art and public as wheeled toys.

The object of the invention is to provide means by which the horse figure may be easily and quickly attached to or detached from the wagon by a child, and which when attached will permit of a vertical tilting movement of the horse or wagon, one with respect to the other, and which, when detached, will allow the parts to be compactly packed for storage or transportation.

With these objects in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a toy horse and wagon, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale, illustrating the manner in which the shafts engage the hangers 3 and Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the shafts.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the wagon, the forward axle of which is j ournaled in the lower ends of hanger-arms 2, which are provided with holes 2.

The numeral 3 denotes a wheel-supported figure, shown in the present instance as be* ing in the form of a horse, which is provided with a system of cranks and levers for actu ating the legs, but which, however, form no part of my invention per se, as other figures may be substituted with or without means for actuating movable parts thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The numeral i denotes the shafts, which consist of a single piece of spring metal bent at its middle upon itself to form the breastband 4 and shafts 4 4, the rear ends of which extend parallel from a to b and are then spread apart from b to c and have their extremities formed with laterally projecting pins or trunnions 4. The shafts intermediate their ends pass through eyes 5, secured in the body of the horse figure, and are soldered or otherwise secured in said eyes to prevent the shafts slipping therethrough, the breast-band serving to relieve the eyes of any undue strain owing to sudden jars or shocks.

In engaging the shafts with the hangers the spread ends of the former are grasped in the hand and pressed together and the trunnions thereof placed between the hangers opposite the holes 2. In removing the pressure the trunnions will engage the holes, thus hitching the horse figure to the wagon. This construction permits of a free vertical tilting movement of either the horse figure or the wagon and forms a convenient and simple means for connecting the two together, which may be done by very young children.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination with a toy wagon and a toy figure, and hangerarms composed of a single piece of material pivoted to the bottom of the wagon and carrying a wheeled axle and provided with holes, of shafts fixedly secured to the toy figure and provided with spring ends having laterally-projecting studs or pins to engage the holes in the hanger-arms, substantially as set forth.
