SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,456, dated November 3, 1896.

Be it known that I, HIEAM B. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a convenient and efficient eraser which may be renewed from time to time at inappreciable expense.

It consists in a holder or handle of suitable form, provided with clamping-jaws and a head or end of the particular form hereinafter described, over which a strip of material having an abrasive surface (such as emery paper or cloth or the like) may be drawn and held by the spring-clamps. Such an eraser will be rst fully described, and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an eraser embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation with the head and eraser portion in section, the clamping-jaws open, and the strip of abrasive material shown at a little distance; and Fig. 3, a similar side elevation, but with the abrasive material in place, and with the head or eraser-stripsupporting portion constructed of spring material instead of solid.

In said drawings the portions marked A represent the handle Vof the eraser; B, the` head or eraser-strip support; C, the clamping-jaws5 D, a sliding ring for operating said clamping-jaws, and E the erasing-strip.

The handle A is of such convenient form as may be desired, and preferably carries a polisher a upon its other end.

The head B is attached to or forms a continuation of the handle A and is suitably formed to support the eraser-strip E. I have found a {iat-sided heart-shaped construction suitable for the purpose, the slightly-rounding sides of such a form being peculiarly adapted to efficient erasing, while the shoulders at the base of said head overhang sufficiently to form recesses into which the clamping-jaws may enter when clamped against the ends of the eraser. This form also enables the strips of abrasive material to be secured by fastening devices, hereinafter de scribed, at a point below the widest part of the head, permitting the entire length of each side to be used in operation without said fastening devices interfering therewith.

The clamping-jaws C are spring-jaws extending' out from a ferrule forming the base, which ferrule surrounds the handle A at the neck below the head B. Said jaws are adapted to spring outwardly by their inherent spring force and to be forced inwardly to impinge tightly upon the neck in a slight .recess formed just under the widest part of the head B by the sliding forward of the ring D.

The ring D surrounds the ferrule C', to which the clamping-jaws C are attached, and is adapted to slide back and forth and thus operate and release said clamping-jaws, as will be readily understood.

The eraser-strips E are strips of any suitable material having an abrasive surface,

such as emery-paper or emery-cioth- Manifestly a large number of these strips can be provided at an expense so trifling as to be almost inappreciable, and the eraser can thus be renewed constantly from time to time by simply removing one of these strips and replacing it with a new one. This operation, as

will be readily seen, is easily performed by slipping down the ring D, which releases the clamping-jaws, taking off the old strip, inserting the ends of a new strip under said jaws, then forcing said ring D back to place.

Practical experiments have demonstrated the high efficiency of this eraser, and its cheapness and convenience are obvious.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An eraser consisting of a handle having a heart-shaped head formed on its end, notches cut into the sides of the neck under said head, a strip of abrasive material mounted on said head with its ends extending around the corners thereof and down alongside the neck, over said notches, clamping-jaws secured at one end to the sides of said handle, and ar- IOO ranged so that their points, or jaws proper, In witness whereof I have hereunto set nly will enter said notches in said neck, and a hand and seal, at Frankfort, Indiana, this 4th sliding ring,` mounted on said handle over said day of October, A.
