Be it known that I, WILLIAM SIMON, .l r., a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ourtain-Stretchers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in curtain-stretchers; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, l represents the side rails of the frame of my improved stretcher, and 2 the end rails. Each rail has a dovetail groove 3 extending throughout its length. The grooves are formed by means of flanges 4 on the rails, as shown clearly in Fig. IV.

5 represents blocks having dovetail tenons 6, iittin g in the grooves 3, each block having an inner portion 7, that fits against the inner wall of the inner flange 4, as shown at S, Fig. V, and that bears against the upper surface of the rail, as shown at 9, Fig. V. The blocks are thus supported in a permanent and firm manner on the rails, while they are capable of being moved lengthwise of the rails, so that 4o they may be adjusted to and from each other,

as may be found convenient in attaching the curtain l() to them. The tenons G and portions 7 of the blocks bearin g as they do against the flanges 4 and against the upper face of the rails prevent any tendency of the blocks to twist or get out of shape. Each block is provided with a hook Il to receive the curtain. By making the blocks movable on the .rails they can be shifted to any position necessary to receive the curtain, a feature particularly useful where curtains having 'scalloped borders are being stretched. The hooks 1l are secured to the inner faces of the parts 7, and thus when the curtain is applied the tension has no tilting effect on the blocks, which would prevent their easy adjustment along the side rails, after the curtain is applied, by creating friction between the tenons 6 and the walls of the dovetail grooves and between the portions 7 and the parts that they 6o bear against. Each rail is provided near its end with a slot 12 to receive the bolts 13, provided with thumb-nuts 14. The slots 12, as will be observed, are made in the rails between the flanges 4, so that when the bolts are applied to hold the rails in position they also serve to keep the blocks 5 from slipping off of the rails when the stretcher is not in use or when the curtain is removed.

The side rails of the frame are preferably 7o divided about midway of their lengths and secured together by hinges 14, thus permitting the frame to be folded when not in use, and when in use the side rails are held in open position by means of clips l5, (one on each side of each joint of the frame,) adapted to receive pins 16.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a curtain-stretcher, the side and end rails forming a frame and provided with raisedY 8o flanges or ribs on their upper surfaces forming dovetail grooves, blocks 5 having dovetail tenons 6 tting in said grooves and portions 7 fitting at 8 and 9 against the upper faces of the rails and against the inner faces of the inner iianges respectively, and hooks made fast to said portions 7, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a curtain-stretcher, the combination of a frame composed of end and side rails 9o and having dovetail grooves formed by raised fianges, bolts connecting said rails together and which fit in slots made in the rails at the points of said grooves, and blocks having dovetail tenons 6 fitting in said grooves and 95 portions 7 fitting at 8 and 9 against the upper faces of the rails and against the inner faces of the inner fianges respectively, and hooks made fast to said portions 7, substa'ntiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
