Description

G. 'M. LUFKIN.
-swIvBL PLOW.
( No Model.)
No. 570,177. Patented Oct 27, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. LUFKIN, OF LANGD ON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
SWlVEL-PLOW..
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 570,177, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed April 30, 1891. Serial No. 391,165. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. LUFKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Langdon, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swivel-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an automatic adjusting-latch, the object of which is to facilitate reversing the plow, as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The beam A, handles B B, and landside or standard 0 constitute the framework of the plow. The moldboard D, including point or share E, provided with wings a a, is pivoted to the front end of the standard or landside O and to the rear end of the same by a V- shaped dog-brace, which is attached to the inner side of the moldboard D, on which it may be reversed from right to left, forming a right-hand plow or a left-hand plow, and held firmly in position by one of the hooks b, which are screwed into the arms 0 c of cap F and held in position by check-nuts d d or in any convenient way. The cap F is provided with a chamber which sits loosely on an upright fulcrum G, provided with a chamber 6, in which is set a spiral spring f, with a bolt 9, passing up through the springf', chamber e,
and cap F, holding it firmly down on the upright G.
The under surface or bottom of cap F is provided with a series of inclined planes h, which correspond with a similar series t on the fulcrum G, arranged in such a manner that when the upperhook b is pushed downward the spring f is compressed. The lower hook I) is raised from its catch j in the moldboard D, and the upper hook I) is carried downward by means of the contraction of the spring f, operating on the inclined planes h and 'i, into position to latch automatically into the catch j on the opposite side when the plow is reversed, and the lower hook is carried upward into position to be used as a lever for unlatching the plow when reversing.
I am aware that prior to my invention plows have been made with reversible moldboards and automatic latches. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but
WVha-t I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a swivel-plow, the combination of the fulcrum G, provided with inclined planes 1', and chamber e, the spiral spring f, bolt g, and cap F, having inclined planes h and hooks b b, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
CHARLES M. LUFKIN. IVitnesses:
I-IATTIE L. LUFKIN, ALMON B. LUFKIN.
