Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY F. MAOHOLD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SADDLE-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,033, dated October 2'7, 1896. Application filed February 5, 1896. Serial No. 578,093. [No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTHONY F. MACHOLD,
-a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for seats or saddles of bicycles and other vehicles; and it has for its object to provide a cover or pad that shall accurately conform to the oonfigul ation of the human body and form a cushion for the muscles and glands upon which the Weight of the body exerts a direct pressure, and is so shaped as to permit perfect freedom and action to the limbs of the rider.
It has for its further object to provide a pad or cover Waterproofed upon its under side in order that the same may be reversed to protect the saddle from rain or moisture.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel features and in the construction hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of my improved pad or cover. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line 3 3 of Fig. -1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the pad or cover, which is formed of felt and so shaped as to conform to the shape of the saddle or seat which it is clesigned to cover. The under side of the felt pad or cover is treated with a waterproof composition, such, for instance, as rubber in solution, or the like, and has attached to its forward end a strap 2 and to its rear end straps 3, by means of which the pad or cover is secured to the saddle.
In order to form a cushion for that portion of the body that supports the greater portion of the weight of the rider, I form the rear portion of the pad or cover of a sufficient thickness to afford a somewhat yielding or elastic wardly over the longitudinal axis of the pad.
to form an elastic support for those muscles and glands which aid in supporting the Wei ght' of the rider, while the sides are tapered ofi or reduced in thickness to permit of the utmost freedom of the limbs of the rider.
The pad or cover constructed as above described serves as a cushion or elastic support for the body of the rider, affording not only comfort, but also operating to protect the clothing from undue Wear, and by providing its under side with a waterproof composition the pad or cover, when reversed, serves as a protection for the saddle against the weather.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture a reversible pad or cover for saddles consisting of a yielding pad of felted fibrous material having a thickened portion extending transversely over its entire rear and also extending for- Ward along the longitudinal center of the pad to the front thereof, the sides of the pad on each side of said centrally-thickened portion being tapered or reduced in thickness, said pad being coated upon one side with a waterproof material, and means for securing the pad to the saddle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IIGSSGS.
ANTHONY F. MAOHOLD. lVitnesses:
H. J. THOMPSON, S. K. SHEDAKER.
