a IHM? in ll" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT T. BEMIS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD DRY-KILN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,992, dated. October 27, 1896.
Application filed February 17, 1896. Serial No. 579,544. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. BEMIS', a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lumber-Trucks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,l which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trucks for use in lumber dry-kilns; and it has for its object the provision ofa simple and eflicient truck of the character` described.
The truck consists, essentially, of two longitudinal strips of thin channelesteel, which are held at the required distance apart by means of spreaders or hollow cylindrical washers, through which bolts are passed.
The essential feature of the invention resides in the peculiar construction of the washer, whereby the side strips of the truckframe may, by tightening the nuts upon the bolts, be sprung inward sufficiently to cause the nuts upon the bolts to be securely held or locked against possible accidental displacement.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this speciiication, and in which drawingsmeans of spreaders or washers B, which are interposed between the strips A at suitable points. The wheels, which are grooved to 55 lit the track upon which they are designed to run, are journaled in openings provided for the purpose in the side strips A, and are preferably provided with roller or ball bearings.
The spreaders or Washers B are preferably cylindrical and hollow, being cast each in a single casting, or, if preferred, the heads or ends B may be independent of the body portion of the washer. The heads or ends B are provided with a central opening, through which is passed the bolt D, and the head B at the point which immediately surrounds the central bolt-opening is thickened, as shown at B2. The thickness of the washer at 7o the center, through which the bolt is passed, is slightly less than the length of the body portion of the washer, so that the side strips or plates A A will be sprung inward at the point at which the bolt passes through the washer, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The inner surface of the strip A upon each side of the washer will be fur- Anished with a substantial bearing against the thickened portion B2 of the washer-head, and 8o the tendency of the plate or strip to spring outward will serve to eifectually prevent the possibility of the nuts upon the bolt from workingloose, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a truck for use in lumber-dryin g kilns, two parallel side pieces A, A, the wheels having their axles journaled in openings formed 9o in said side pieces, the washers orseparators B interposed at intervals of the length of the truck and serving to hold the side pieces at the required distance apart, the said washers B being hollow and having central openings for the passage of a securingbolt, the thickness of the washer at the point at which the bolt passes through it being less than at the periphery of the washer, substantially as described and for the purpose speciied.
2. A washer designed for separating the channel-steel strip forming the frame of a lumber-kiln truck, of the character described, the said washer consisting of a hollow body IOO portion having apertul'ed ends for the pas- In testimony whereof I affix my signature sage of a securing-bolt, the ends being proin presence of two Witnesses. vided with a thickened portion surrounding the central bolt-opening and the length of 5 the Washer at the point at which the bolt Vii-nesses:
passes through it being less than at the outer L. C. HILLS, face of the Washer, substantially as described. FRANKLIN I-I. IIOUGH.
