SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 569,907, dated October 20, 1896. Application filed September 24, 1895. Serial No. 563,542. (No model.)
To all whom, t 71ml/ concer/t:
Be it known that I, JOHAN A. ZINN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Hydraulic Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of hydraulic valves, so that many of the parts may be in duplicate; and a further object of my invention is to provide a valve iu which all the packing is seated within the casing. These objects I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of my improved hydraulic valve, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View.
A is the casing, having the inlet-port a, the exhaust-port d2, and the port a/ to the machine to be operated.
A is the supply-chamber.
A2 is a chamber communicating with the port leading to the machine through the passage a3, and A3 is a chamber communicating with the exhaust-chamber A4. This chamber communicates with the port a through the exhaust-passage cui.
B is the piston-valve, having ports b b', which form a communication between the chambers A and A2, and the port-s b2 and b3, which form a communication between the chambers A3 and A4.
Adapted to a curved seat c in the casing A is a packing-ring e., U -shaped in cross-section, and pressing down upon this ring is a metallic follower-rin g I, having a tongue t', adapted to the U-shaped packing e.. Mounted above this ring I is a sleeve E, perforated to allowT for the passage of thev fluid into the valve, and this sleeve supports the ring I', being a duplicate of the ring I. This ring has a tongue t", which forces the packing e into a socket f, formed on the lower portion of the cage F. The upper end ot' this cage has a tongue f", which forces the packing-ring e2 into the seat formed in the cap C of the valve. The cage F is screw-threaded and is adapted to the screw-threaded opening in the cap.
Between the cap C and the valve-casing A is a packing-ring c', and the cap is held in place by nuts d d, adapted to threaded bolts CZ", projecting from the casing.
Seated in the lower portion of the valve is a ring I2, similar to the ring I, and this ring has a tongue t2, adapted to force the packing c3 into the seat f2 of the cage F, which is a duplicate of the cage F, and has a tongue f3, which contines the packing e4 against the seat formed in the cap C', which is held in place by screw-bolts and nuts similar to the cap O.
The cages F and F are screwed into their respective caps C C', and the packing e2 and e4 are thus confined in place. The other packing-rings are then adjusted in the casing and the caps applied. Thus it will be seen that by screwing down upon the cap C the packing-rings e and e are tightened, and by screwing upon the cap C' the ring e3 is tightened; and, further, it will be noticed that the caps C C are duplicates, as well as the cages F F and the rings I I I2. All the packingrings are alike. Consequently the valve can be made very cheaply and of few parts. Suitable nipples are provided for the supply-port ct and for the port to the machine, a', and the exhaust-port is coupled to the exhaust-pipe in the ordinary manner.
When the valve is in the position shown from the machine; but the exhaust is open from the machine, allowing the Huid to escape; but when the valve is raised so as to bring the port b up into the chamber A2 the fluid under pressure will pass from the chamber A into the chamber A2, through the passage cti to the machine, and both ports b2 and b3 will be in the chamber A3, and consequently the exhaust-port will be cut off from the machine.

By the al' ovedescribed arrangement the packing-rings,\vhich are preferably of leather, are not exposed to the action of the liuid, except as the valve-stem is shifted. Then the pressure of fluid entering the ports of the valve-stem keeps the packing in place and clear of the ports, thus preventing wearing of the packing.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination in a hydraulic valve, of the casin g havin g supply and exhaust ports and a port to the machine, and having chambers therein, the chamber A' communicating with the supply-port, the chambers A2 and A3 communicating with the port to the machine, and the chamber A4 communicating with the exhaust-port, packing between the chambers, a piston-valve having two sets of port-s, one set forming communication between the chambers A and A2, and the other set forming communication between the chambers A3 and A1,substantially as specified.
2. The combination in a hydraulic valve, of the casing having chambers A', A2, A3 and Al formed therein, caps adapted to each end of the casing, packing-rings in the caps, cages,
y follower-rings and packing between the chambers, with a piston having ports therein, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a hydraulic valve, of the casing having the chamber A communicating with a supply-port, chambers A2 and A3 communicating with a port to the machine and an exhaust-chamber A4, packingrings e, e and e3, tongued followers t', c", 122 adapted to the packing-rings, cages F, F', and caps, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the casing Ahaving the chambers A', A2, A3 and A4, a packing ring e adapted to the seat in the casing, a follower t mounted on the ring, a sleeve E and a follower 7J' mounted on the sleeve, a packing e', a cage F adapted to receive the packing e and having a tongue adapted to packing e2, a cap C to which the cage is adapted, a ring I2 adapted to the opposite end of the casing, a packing-ring e3 adapted to said ring, a cage F', packing el, a cap C', with a piston-valve B having two sets of ports arranged substantially as described.
5. The combination in a hydraulic valve, of the casing, the piston-valve, ports therein, a cap for the casing, a cage screwed into the said cap, a packing-ring confined in the cap by the cage, said cage also coni ning a packing in the casing, substantially as described.
