Be it known that I, OLE O. S'ronLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of iscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. s
, This invention relates particularly to gate or plug valves.
The main objects of the invention are to balance the pressure on the gate or plug, to facilitate the operation of the valve, to avoid leakage due to wear and cutting of the working faces and to variation in their relative positions, and generally to improve the construction and operation of this class of valves.
it consists in certain novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is an axial section of a valve embodying the invention.
a is the valve-case, formed with coaxial seats 11 b and an annular passage 0 between them. This passage opens on one side into one part of the valve-chamber, and the seats are connected on that side by a tie-piece (Z. The partition in which the lower valve opening and seat are formed extends obliquely across the valve-chamber and joins the case above and below and on diagonally opposite sides of said opening and seat. The upper seat joins the case all around the valve-openin The construction above described firmly holds the two valve-seats in the proper relation to each other and to the valve plug or gate under varying conditions of temperature and pressure. On one side the case is formed with an opening into the valve-chamber near to and concentric withone of the seats 6. This opening is normally closed by a recessed cap 0, which has an internally-screw-threaded neck and stuflingbox f for the valve-operating stem.
1 is a tubular or hollow gate or plug, which is preferably tapered to lit the correspondingly-tapered seats 6 and insure a tight lit and closure of the valve. The gate or pl ug g is preferably formed on the outside with an annular recess between its worki 'lg faces and adjacent to the passage 0, which extends entirely around it. It is provided with a key /a/, which engages with a groove or keyway l in the cap I parallel with the axis of the plug. This key and keyway permit a free axial movement of the plug, but prevent it from turning in the valve-case and i'naintain the same relation of the working faces of the valve to the seats, so that if grooves or depressions are worn or cut in either part by projections on the other part they will always be iillcd by such projections and leakage prevented when the valve is closed. The gate or plug may be operated by any suitable form of connection passing through the valve-case. l haveshown as suitable for this purpose a screw-tlneaded stem j, which is centrally swiveled at its inner end in the gate or plug 7 and engages with the thread in the neck of the cap 1 through which it passes, being provided at its outer end with a hand-wheel 7; or other suitable means for turning it. When the valve is opened by withdrawing the plug g into the recessed cap 0, fluid flows directly through the lower valveopening from one part of the valve-chamber into the other; but fluid flowing through the upper valve-opening must pass, in whichever direction it flows, through the recessed cap and hollow plug The hollow or tubular plug g, opening at one end into one part of the valve-chamber and at the other end into the recessed cap a, is thus balanced at the ends, and the annular passage 0, which opens into the other part of the valve-chamber and extends entirely around the gate or plug, balances it on the sides, thereby tending to hold said gate or plug central and preventing unequal lateral pressure of its working faces against the seats 7/. The free and easy working of the valve is thus insured and unequal wear and cutting of its working faces and consequent leakage are prevented. The valve works as easy under pressure as without.
Various modifications in the details of construction may be made without departing from the principle and intended scope of the invention.
I claim 1. In a valve the combination of a case having two parallel and coaxial valveopenings and a passage between said openings commu nicating on one side thereof with the valvechamber, one of said openings being formed in a partition which joins the case on diagonally opposite sides of said openings, and a hollow axially-movable plug fitted in said openings, substantially as described.
2. In a valve the combination of a case formed with a partition extending obliquely across the valve-chamber and having a valve opening and seat, said case being formed at one side with an opening and seat coaxial with the opening and seat in said partition and a passage being formed between said openings and seats in communication with the valvechamber on one side thereof, and a hollow axially movable plug fitted in said seats and forming a passage for fluid flowing through the valve-opening at one side of the case, substantially as described.
3. In a valve the combination of a case having an opening and valve-seat in one side and a partition extending obliquely across the valve-chamber and having an opening and valve-seat coaxial with the opening and seat at the side of the valve-case, a passage being formed between said seats communicating with one part of the valve-chamber on one side only of said partition, a hollow axiallymovable plug fitted in said seats and a cap closing the opening in the side of said case and recessed to receive said plug when it is Withdrawn from its seats in opening the valve, substantially as described.
4:. In a valve the combination of a case having an opening and a tapered valve-seat at one side and a partition extending obliquely across the valve-chamber and having an opening and a tapered valve-seat parallel and coaxial with the opening and seat at one side of said case, a passage being formed between said seats opening into the valve-chamber on one side only of said partition and a hollow tapered axially-movable plug fitted in said seats, substantially as described.
5. In a valve the combination of a case having two coaxial valve-seats one of which is in a partition joining the valve chamber on obliquely opposite sides of said seats and forms with the other a passage communicating with the valve-chamber on one side only of said partition, a hollow axially-movable plug fitted in said seats, and a stem swiveled in said plug and threaded in the case, the plug and case being provided with a key and keyway which hold the plug from turning in the case, substantially as described.
6. In a valve the combination of a case having a valve-opening in a partition joining said case on diagonallyopposite sides of said opening, said partition being connected across the open space at one side of said opening with the opposite wall of the case by a tie-piece, and an axially-movable plug fitted in said opening, substantially as described.
7. In a valve the combination of a case having seats separated by an annular passage which communicates through an opening on one side with one part of the valve-chamber and connected on the open side by a tie-piece, and an axially-movable plug fitting said seats, substantially as described.
