SAND-BAND.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. GIBSON, of lVoodsville, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Sand-Band, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved vehicle sand-band which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to permit of conveniently fastening the band in place on the axle or removing it therefrom whenever desired.

The invention consists principally of a hood having an extension adapted to engage the axle, bands removably connected with the axle, and a spring held on the extension and engaging with its free end the said bands.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is also to be had to the accompan ying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

The improved sand-band is provided with a hood A, made of sheet metal or other suitable material and approximately semicircular in cross-section, as indicated in the drawings.

From the back A of the hood A extends inwardly an extension A adapted to rest on top of the axle C, on which revolves the hub B of the vehicle-wheel. The extension A is held in place on the axle by means of bands D and E, of which the band D passes with its sides through an opening A formed in the sides of the extension A The lower ends of the said band are formed with lugs D, ex-

tending inwardly to engage the under side of the axle 0. (See Fig. 3.)

The upper part of the band D extends a suitable distance above the extension A and this upper portion or top of the band is engaged by the free end of the spring F, secured on top of the extension A. The other band E is also provided with inwardly-extending lugs E, engaging the under side of the axle, but the said band does'not pass through openin gs in the extension A but simply straddles the same and is pressed on by a spring G, similar to the spring F, and also fastened to the extension A Now it will be seen by the arrangement described that the sand-band can be readily fastened in place on the axle C, so as to protect the inner end of the hub B, and the said sand-band can be conveniently removed whenever desired by simply pressing the lug ends of the bands D and E outward to disengage the said lugs from the under side of the axle G. The entire device can then be lifted up and removed.

It will further be seen that the sand-band is very simple and durable in construction and is securely held in place by the springs F and G and the lugs D and E, engaging the under side of the axle C.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sand-band, comprising a hood having an extension adapted to engage the axle, bands straddling the said extension and adapted to engage the axle, and springs interposed between the extension and the bands, substantially as shown and described.

2. A sand-band, comprising a hood formed with an extension adapted to engage the axle, U -shaped bands straddling the extension and form ed at their ends with inwardly-projecting lugs adapted to engage the under side of the axle, and springs interposed between the said extension and the bands, substantially as shown and described.

3. A sand-band, comprising a hood having an extension formed with openings in its sides, a U shaped band passing with its sides through the said openings, the ends of the said band being formed with lugs extending inwardly to engage the under side of the axle, and aspringinterposed between the said band and the extension, substantially as shown and described.
