SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,857, dated October 20, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. CLARK, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State 01 Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in 5 Boot or Shoe Trees, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention is intended as an improvement upon the machine for holding boots and shoes while being operated upon shown and described in United States Patent No. 417, 148, granted December 10, 1885), and No. 543,147, granted July 23, 1895, to G. H. Clark; and it consists in many details of construction to be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure l shows in front elevation a machine for holding boots and shoes while being operated upon embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged side elevation and partial section of one of the expansible legs or trees; Fig. 3, a plan view of the leg or tree shown in Fig. 2, the fore partbeing removed; Fig. 4, a detail of the t-readle mechanism; Fig. 5, a detail of the locking device for the expanding device of the tree, and Fig. 6 adetail of the locking device for the shaftcarrying the trees.
The main frame A, having bearings at its upper end for a horizontal shaft 71 to which is secured a disk or hub 12., having upon one side of itsocket-s i for the trees or legs, which are provided with cylindrical end pieces fitting said sockets in order that they may be freely rotated therein, and set-screws e" for holding the legs or trees in said sockets, and also for restraining them from rotating therein when desired, the bell-crank lever e, pivoted to the framework and having an inturned end which engages a pin (1, projecting through the end pieces of the trees, said pins being connected with the Wedges d, by means of which the parts I) c of the trees are separated, the treadle i and its treadle -rod t, connected with said bell-crank lever e, are all substantially as represented in G. H. Clarks improved machine.

a a a g a The fore part g, herein represented as a foot-piece and an attached shin-piece g is detachably connected with said sliding block or plate f by means of a headed stud g, projecting rearwardly from the rear side of the fore part near its sole face and entering the keyhole-slot f, formed in the plate f, and by the aforesaid spring-controlled bolt 9 which enters a socket formed in the upper end of the shin-piece 9 As a specific means of locking the sliding plate f when the parts I) c are separated I have provided a bell-crank lever n, pivoted at n to the part 0, one arm of which has a latched end 71 which enters a socket or engages a shoulder formed on the sliding plate, and the other arm of which is acted upon by a spring 91 which tends to hold the latched end removed from engagement with the sliding plate lhe arm which is acted upon by the spring lies .in the path of movement of the wedge 01, so that when said wedge is moved forward to separate the parts I) c it will strike the bellcrank lever rt and throw its latched end into engagement with the sliding plate.
Independent locking devices are provided for the trees, whereby the parts thereof may be held separated different distances, yet released at any time desired by hand, and also released automatically at a predetermined point in the rotation of the hub or shaft carrying said trees, said locking devices each consisting of a notched pin (1, which projects axially through the end piece of each tree and which is connected with the expanding-wedge d, the notches on said pins being formed circumi'erentially, and a pawl-like engaging device for each notched pin. Said engaging device consists of a plate titted to slide diametrically across the cnd piece in a dovetailed groove formed therein, said plate be ing slotted, as at d to receive the notched pin d, the slot permitting a limited longitudinal movement of said plate, and said plate has at one end a pin (i projecting through the disk h, which is encircled by a short spiral spring (1", the action of which is to draw the slotted plate toward the disk.
The notches formed in the pin 03 are made of such shape as to present circumferential ratchet-teeth, and a thin plate d is adjustably secured by a screw 41 to the under side of the plate 01 the inner edge of which projects over the slot 61' fora short distance, and this inner end engages the notched pin cl, acting as a pawl.
By operating the treadle t the bell-crank lever e is operated, engaging one or another pin cl and moving it inward that the wedge connected therewith may expand the tree, and the pin so moved is held by means of the spring-controlled pawl-like plate (Z in any position that it may be set.
By depressing any one of the pins d by hand or otherwise at any time the pawl-like engaging device is disengaged from the pin cl and the latter permitted to retract. I have also secured to the framework a short arm or projection m, which lies in the path of the pins d as they are turned with the hub or disk h, and whenever one of said pins d strikes said arm on it will be positively pushed inwardly, releasing the pin 61.
As a means of locking the shaft 762 in its different positions I have secured to said shaft a disk 0 having sockets or holes in number and position corresponding to the number of trees on the shaft, and a springpressed pin 0 passes through the frame adapted to enter any hole in the disk o A cam-block o is placed just back of the head of said pin 0 which astrides the pin, and as it is moved up and down the pin is permitted to enter any hole in the disk or is withdrawn therefrom. The cam-block 0 is attached to the upper end of a rod 0, passing down alongside the frame and connected at its lower end with a treadle 0. By depressing said treadle 0 the cam-block is operated to withdraw the pin 0 The treadle t has pivotally connected to it a latch p, which when the treadle is depressed engages a rod 19 and thereby locks the treadle in its depressed position. An intermediate locking-lever 13 1s pivotel to the frame be-' tween the treadles i and 0, one end of which is hook-shaped to engage a treadle 0, while the other end rests upon or is connected with the treadle t and when the treadle t is depressed the locking-lever 13 moves to engage and lock the treadle 0, but when the treadle t is again elevated the locking-lever 19 will be restored. Hence it will be seen that the treadle 0 cannot be operated when the treadle t is depressed.
I claim 1. A boot or shoe tree composed of the front and back leg parts, the plate f sliding in a cut-away portion of the front leg part, having at its outer end the keyholeslot f, and
at its inner end the springpressed pin 9 with finger-piece g and the fore part g having on its rear side the headed stud g, which enters said keyhole-slot f, and having at its upper end a socket which receives the pin 9 substantially as described.
2. A boot or shoe tree comprising front and back leg parts, the sliding plate f on the front leg part, having at its inner end the springpressed pin 9 with finger-piece 9 the fore part g having at its upper end a socket which receives said pin g and means for detachably connecting the lower end of said fore part with said sliding plate, substantially as described.
3. The separable parts I), c, of the tree, wedge cl for separating them, sliding plate f and fore part, combined with the bcllcrank locking-lever n for said plate f, pivoted to the part 0, one arm of which lies in the path of movement of said wedge (Z, to be moved by it to lock the plate.
4:. The separable parts I), c, of the tree, wedge cl for separating them, sliding plate f having a notch in its under side, and a fore part, combined with the bell-crank lockinglever n, for said plate, pivoted to the part 0, one arm of which has a latched end 11 which enters the notch in said plate f to lock it, and the other arm of whichlies in the path of movement of said wedge d, to be moved by it, and the spring a substantially as described.
5. In a machine for holding boots and shoes while being operated upon, a rotatable disk two or more trees supported thereby provided with expanding devices, a bell-crank lever for operating any one of said expanding devices, a treadle with which it is connected, a locking-pin 0 for the shaft of said rotatable disk, cam block 0 for withdrawing it, a treadle connected with said cam-block, and an intermediate locking-lever between said treadles.
6. The expan sible form comprising the parts Z), c, sliding plate on the part c, and fore part borne by it, and an expanding device for said form, combined with a bell-crank locking-lever for said sliding plate operated by said expanding device, one arm of said lever being adapted to engage and hold said plate and the other arm to be engaged by said expanding device, substantially as described.
