SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,829, dated October 20, 1896.

Figure 1 shows in plan view a suificient portion of a dust-pan embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the dust-pan, its mouth or entrance being closed; and Fig. 3, a similar cross-sectional view, the mouth or entrance being opened.

a represents a bottom piece or lip which is made substantially flat and arranged at the front edge of the dust-pan. This lip or plate is made of any suitable width, and its length corresponds to the width of the dust-pan.

A bail-shaped wire frame is attached to or connected with the lip or plate a, it being composed of a piece of wire bent to form a more or less U-shaped portion b (see dotted lines, Fig. 1) and short vertical portions Z7 at each side or end thereof and horizontal arms 5 The lip or plate a is connected to the arms 19 as, for instance, by bending the side edges of said lip or plate over the arms, as represented in Fig. l.

A top plate or handle portion cis pivotally connected to the lower part or frame, it being herein represented as consisting of a flat plate having a wire binding 0 along its side edges, and also along the outer edge, said wire being bent or formed into a handle, or into such shape as may form a cooperative part of a handle, as at 0 The ends of the wire are extended a short distance beyond the rear or inner edge of the plate to engage the pivotal connection.

\Vhile many forms or constructions of pivotal connections may be employed, I have herein represented. one simple form, consisting of a more or less triangular-shaped plate (1, having a hole through it'which receives the inner end of the horizontal arm Z2 of the bail-shaped frame, and also having upon its inner side or face two grooves cl, arranged about ninety degrees apart, more or less, and near the lower end a hole is formed through which passes the end of the wire a, which is bent outwardly at such point to form a pivot. There will be such a triangular plate at each side of the pan. The handle portion is thus pivoted to the plates (1, and as the grooves receiveand hold the wires said handle portion may be held either open or closed.

By placing the plates d on the horizontal arms 5 as shown, it will be seen that they may have formed on them props or feet for the rear end of the lip a, elevating said end a short distance above the floor.

The U-shaped part of the bail-shaped frame I) is inclosed in a flexible bag 6, the upper front edge of which is connected with the top plate 0 and the lower front edge of which is connected with the bottom piece a, preferably in a. detachable manner as, for instance, the front edge of the bag 6 may have eyelet-holes, and the rear edges of the upper and under plates may also have holes formed in them, and by means of a cord passing through said holes said bag may be attached; but many other forms of fastenings may be employed.

The bail-shaped frame, it will be seen, keeps the flexible bag or dirt-receptacle 6 out in proper position, and by pivoting the top piece or plate having a handle to the lower part a two-part pivoted frame is provided adapted to open and close the mouth of the bag or dirt-receptacle.

I claim- 1. The dust-pan herein described, consisting of the flexible bag 6, and a two-part frame connected to the mouth thereof, one part of which has a handle and the other a lip, a, of a length corresponding to the width of the dust-pan,said parts being pivotally connected together, and thus adapted to open and close the mouth of said bag, and meansfor holding said two-part frame open.

2. The dust-pan herein described, consisting of the flexible bag e-, a two-part frame connected to the mouth thereof, one part of which has a handle and the other a lip, and pivotal connections for said parts of the frame thus adapting it to open and close the mouth of said bag, and a bail-shaped support for said bag 6 attached to the lip portion of the two-part frame.

The dust-pan herein described, consisting of the flexible bag 6, and a two-part frame connected to the mouth thereof, one part of which has a handle and the other a lip, said parts being pivotally connected together, and thus adapted to open and close the month of said bag, and the plate cl having formed thereon feet for elevating the rear end of the lower part of said two-part frame.

4. The d List-pan herein described, consisting of the flexible bag 6, a two-part pivoted frame at the mouth thereof comprising the lip a, the handle portion 0, and the plates cl fixed to the lip to which said handle portion is pivoted, substantially as described.
