QUILTING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 569,616, dated October 20, 1896.

Application filed March 8, 1895- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we,WAsH1No'roN B. CLICK and ISAAC A. CLICK, citizens of the United States, residing at Whitewright, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Quilting Attachment for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to quilting attachments for sewing-machines, and particularly to an improvement upon the construction shown in our former patent, No. 529,518, granted November 20, 1894; and the objects in view are to simplify and improve the general construction of the device, to provide simple means for adjusting the elevation of the track at its extremities to vary the inclination thereof and for securing the upper ends of the supporting devices to a stationary object, such as the ceiling, and to provide means for adjusting the inclination of the traveler-bar of the hanger to suit that of the track.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a quilting-machine constructed in ac cordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a front vicwpartly in section. Fig. 8 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the supports for the track.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates a sectional track constructed, substantially as described in our said former patent, with a beveled upper edge and comprising detachable sections 2 and 3, connected by a threaded coupling-pin 4:, and rising from the extremities of said track are extensible supports 5, each consisting of relatively-adjustable members 6 and 7, the former of which is attached to the end of the track-rail, and the latter of which is provided at its upper end with a hook S for engagement with a screw-eye 9, adapted to be secured in a ceiling or other stationary object to form a universal joint and allow swinging movement in any direction of the supports. ' of the support are provided at their extremities, respectively, with keepers or sleeves 10 to provide for relative longitudinal adjustment, and a wedge 11 is inserted between the contiguous sides of the members to lock said parts at the desired extension. One of the supports is longer than the other to provide for holding the track at an inclination downward toward the left, and the members of the supports which are attached to the track are strengthened by means of inclined braces 12. If it is desired to increase or diminish the inclination of the track, the left-hand support may be lengthened 0r shortened independent-ly of the other, this independent adjustment being made possible by reason of the swiveled or loose attachment of the upper ends of the supports.

The means described for locking the members of the supports provide for securing them at precisely the desired adjustment without puncturing or otherwise weakening the parts.

The quilting-frame 13 comprises end bars 14, having a plurality of bearings, in which are mounted the trunnions of rollers 14, arranged substantially as described in our said former patent, and secured attheir lower ends to the centers of said end bars are the vertical rods 15, which support the longitudinal top bar 16, nuts being arranged upon the rods above and below the top bar and in contact with the upper surfaces of the end bars of the quilting-frame proper to maintain said parts at the desired relative adjustment. Secured to the center of the top bar, by means of a vertical bolt 17, is a transversely-disposed bracket 18, having a plurality of openings 19, through either of which said bolt can be passed, and mounted to traverse said track is a hanger 20, to the lower end of which is pivotally connected said bracket. This pivotal connection is attained by means of a vertical pivot-bolt 21 ,arranged in one of the openings of the bracket and extendin g through twin vertically-alined bearing'eyes 22 upon the upright member 23 of the hanger. This connection provides for free rotary movement of the quilting-frame through an entire circle, and by means of the pivot-bolt, which is engaged below the bracket by a suitable nut, the quilting-frame maybe adjusted vertically with relation to the hanger to secure that accuracy of arrangement which is desirable in devices of the class to which this invention belongs. The traveler-bar 24, which forms the other member of the hanger, is disposed at a slight inclination to a horizontal plane to agree with the inclination of the track and is secured to the vertical member of the hanger bymeans of a through-bolt 25, travelers 26 being attached to the extremities of said traveler-bar to traverse the track. The traveler-bar is also angularly adjustable to correspond with the track by means of said bolt, which performs the additional function of a clamping-bolt. The nut of the bolt is loosened to allow the traveler-bar to turn on the bolt as a center, whereby the bar 24 may be disposed parallel with the track, while the upright member 25 occupies a vertical position.

From the above description it will be seen that the construction of the improved apparatus is simple and that the same may be manufactured at a small cost, various means of adjustment being provided to enable the operator to arrange the parts in the preferred positions with an accuracy which is desirable in machines of this class, while at the same time perfect freedom of movement both longitudinally and transversely, together with the swinging or rotary movement above described, is attainable.

In order to secure the rollers of the quilting-frame against backward rotation after they have been adjusted to present a portion of the surface of the quilt or article for operation, we employ flexible perforated locking devices, such as chains 27, secured at one end by means of staples 28 to the rollers and adapted to engage pins 29 on the contiguous transverse bar of the frame. The links of the chain provide for securing the parts accurately at any desired adjustment, and it is obvious that loss of time is avoided in the use of locking devices of this construction. Chains are preferred for this purpose for the reason that they are durable and are not perceptibly elastic, whereby, when adjusted and locked in place, the rollers do not yield under strain.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination with a track, and ad justable supporting devices for the same whereby the inclination thereof may be varied, of a hanger adapted to support a quilting-frame and having a traveler-bar adapted to traverse the track and corresponding in inclination therewith, and an upright depending from said traveler-bar, and means for securing said upright in a desired position with relation to the traveler-bar whereby the former is adapted tooccupy a vertical position irrespective of the angle of inclination of the latter, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a track, and adjustable means for supporting the same whereby it may be arranged at the desired inclination, of a hanger adapted to support a quilting-frame and having a traveler-bar mo unted to traverse the track and correspond in inclination therewith, an upright bar, and a clamping-bolt engaging registering openings in said upright and traveler bars to allow adjustment of the upright bar with relation to the traveler-bar and enable said parts to be locked at the desired adjustment, whereby the upright bar is adapted to occupy a vertical position irrespective of the inclination of the traveler-bar, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a track, of end supports for the track, each support comprising relatively-adjustableparallel members each provided with a keeper or sleeve em bracing the other member, one of the members being rigidly secured to an extremity of the track and the other being universally mounted at its upper extremity to provide for swinging movement in all directions, wedges 11 adapted to be inserted between the contiguous surfaces of the members of each support, whereby said members may be locked at any desired extension to arrange the track at the desired inclination, and a hanger adapted to support a quilting-frame and having an angularly adjustable traveler bar mounted to traverse the track and provided with looking devices whereby it may be secured at an inclination corresponding with that of the track, substantially as specified.
