SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,590, dated October 18, 1896. Application filed February 24:, 1896. Serial No. 680,294. (No model.)
To all whom it nmy concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER SHAW, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hand Tacking-Machines and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the head of the tacker. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the upper part of a tacker with the spiral spring partly removed.
Hand-tackers are instruments familiar to all persons skilled in the art, such a tacker as is shown in the drawings being described in Letters Patent to Frank Chase, No. 356, 620, dated January 25, 1887. In the machine there illustrated and in other machines of which a spring-plunger is a part the spiral spring D, whose function it is to elevate the plunger 13 after it has been forced down, is inserted about the shank of the plunger before the machine is fully assembled, and when a new spring is to be inserted, which is a frequent occurrence, as breakages are common, it has heretofore been necessary to take the machine apart in order to remove the broken spring and insert the new one.
My improvement consists in forming a slanting slot from the under to the upper side of the head of the plunger, which slot slants in accord with the spiral of the spring. (See Fig. 2.) The spiral spring, which rests against the under side of the head I), may be turned around until its outer end comes opposite the lower opening of the slot E, which it will enter if the spring be turned farther, and by continuing the turning of the spring it may be entirely removed.
