Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- OLIVER S. JUDD, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS i To ali whom it may concern:
Be it known that ,L OLIVER S. JUDD, of
-NeW Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I' do hereby decla-re that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings, so as to enable others skilled to make and use the same therefrom, letters of reference being marked thereon, which indicate like parts in each of the figures.
Figures 1 andv2 are partiallyseetional views.
a is the hook proper. b is the latch by means of which the hook is opened and closed, and is actuated by a pulling. motion of the spring,`instead of by pressure, as heretofore. 'c is a strap-loop, by means of which it (the hook) is secured to a strap in the ordinary Way.
The sides of the chamber It, formed in the latch b, are fitted to the inside of the chamber h', formed in the heel of the hook-shank, and is secured thereto by and oscillates ou the pin e. By' forming or making a chamber in the heel of this hook I am enabled to produce a rich symmetrical appearance to the hook, and, at the same time, make a great saving of metal and afford abundance of room for the actuating-sprin g g.
g is a spring, which passes once or more around the axis-pin e, Within the chamber h, one end of which is secured in a hole or slit formed in the end,`or near Vthe end, of the heel of the shank of the hook or the heel of the latch, While the other end takes its bearing against the side of the chamber of' the opposite part `from that in which the end of' the spring is secured.
It will be observed that the action of the spring is entirely different from those nonT in use, the action of which is to pull instead of push the latch to its place in the hook. In this Way the spring is more perfectly protected and concealed from View, and allows a more perfect and easy inward play of the latch .Y
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent; is-
Securing one end of the spring g in the heel of the shank of the hook or latch, while the other end bears against the opposite side of the chamber, and thereby produces a pulling motion, substantially as and for the purpose described. A
