Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.:
MARCUS L. M. HUSSEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specifioation forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,941, dated August 7, 1866.
To all whom it may concert/1,.'
Be it known that I, MARCUS L. M. HUssEv, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Holding and Filing Documents, Letters, and other Papers; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the Construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l, is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a front elevation, With the sliding cover E removed; Fig. 3, avertical section; Fig. 4, a side elevation; Fig. 5, a horizontal section, with the sliding cover E removed; Fig. 6, a horizontal section containing papers.
A represents the bottom of the case or holder or base on which the spiral springs rest. Bis the movable plate or trencher. G C C are the edges of the case, against which the trencher or movable plate is pressed. D D are the spiral springs, which rest on the base or bottom ot' the holder or case, and are connected with the' trencher B. E is the sliding cover.
The device above named or described is a metallic case, the sides perpendicular to the base or bottom7 and the edges C C C bent over at right angles with the sides, against which edges the trencher B is pressed; and said device is adapted in size and shape to the size and shape of the intended contents, which contents are received .and held in position by the metallic plate or trencher B, which is forced and held, by a graduated pressure, steadily and rmly against the upper edges ofthe case C G C by the two spiral springs D D, attached at their base to the bottom of the case A, and connected with and upon Which the trencher B rests, connecting it with the bottom of the box or case A.
Fig. 6 showsrthe operation of the machine, the spiral springs yielding to the pressure and forcing up the trencher when the pressure is Withdrawn, gradually and firmly in proportion to the force and duration of the pressure. The sliding cover E slides under the edges of the case O C G, above the trencher B, and outside of the contents, for the purpose of protecting them and of holding them more firmly in position. This sliding cover E is constructed in the form of a paper folder and cutter, and being of the saine widthtas the interior of the letter-tile, the papers when folded tit readily and easily therein. It serves, therefore, as a removable cover to the papers when tiled, and also as a folder an d cutter for papers in preparation for tiling.
I do not claim the use of springs and a slidy door, and also as a paper-folder or cutter.
MARCUS L. M. HUSSEY.
