IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,932, dated August 7, 1S66.

Be it known that I, CHAUNGEY H. HALE, of Fayetteville, county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vertical section 5 Fig. 2, an end elevation; Fig. 3, the roller with the cloth wrapped around 5 Fig. 4, the perforated wash-board.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of the wash-board, the covered roller, the adjustable springs at the ends of the rollers, and the arrangement of the board in the box, as arranged and combined.

A represents the box of the washing-machine; ]3, the lever that operates the shaft C, to which the arms D D are attached, that hold the rollersf"E E. Gr is the elliptic spring at top, that gives a yielding action to the shaft C.

The wash-board H is perforated between the square ribs J, so as to allow a free circulation of the water through the board, and the ribs J allow the rollers E to pass over'theni easier than when the ribs are made round. The per-A forations also allow the water to wet the clothes thoroughly on the under side and the 4 dirt to pass off immediately. The4 rollers E are covered with felt or canvas by iirst cutting the cloth or felt into strips, and reeling or Winding it onto the roller, and nailing the strips atboth ends of the roller, which enables me to fasten and tighten the covering or cloth completely and permanently to the roller, and prevent the roller from breaking the buttons of shirts in the washing. I have also two self-adjusting springs,K K, on each arm,

Vthat press against the ends of the rollers to give an Veasy steady motion to the rollers. I also attach a water-shield or board, L, across the end of the box A, near the top, on an in` eline, to prevent the water while washin g from slopping over the box.

, What I claim as my. invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arrangement of the perforated and ribbed wash-board and covered rollers E, in combination `with the adjustable springs K, as herein` described, and for the purposes set forth.
