UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DANIEL LORASH, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
DUMPING WAGON-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,108, dated October 6, 1896.
Application filed December 30, 1895. Serial No. 573,855. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ 'wh/0m, it muy concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DANTEL LoRAsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping lVagon- Bodies; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device designed to facilitate the unloading of wagons; and it consists of a peculiar arrangement of the bottom of a wagon bed or body and certain mechanical apparatus, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
My Object is to provide an improved dumping-bed which will eliminate all the defects incident to devices for this purpose as usually constructed.
A further object is to provide a dumpingbed from which loads of various kinds may be dumped without requiring any labor or delay on the part of the attendant or driver, allowing all particles of the load to freely pass from the wagon-bed.
lith these objects in view I have constructed my apparatus in such a manner as to be free of complications, of positive movement, easily constructed, and durable in use.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a side view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3, a front elevation of a wagon-body, showing operating-levers. Fig. 4 is a plan View. Fig. 5 is a side view of a modified form of arranging the apparatus. Fig. 6v is a longitudinal sectional View, and Fig. 7 is a front view, of wagon-body, showing operating-levers.A Fig. Sis a side elevation showing my device arranged for dumping only a portion of a load, while retaining a part.
In the drawings, Arepresents awagon body -or bed constructed in the usual manner as when intended to haul bulky matter, such as earth, stone, or gravel, dac., with such modifications as are embraced in my invention. The bottom is composed of a series of hinged trap-doors or drop-sections B.
In construction I use either wood or iron for the sides, ends, and bottom, as may be found most suitable for the particular kin of loads to be hauled.
The drop-doors vare provided with hinges d, which have a hinged rod g2 passing through from one side of the bodyto the other. These bolts or rods are held in place and supported by cleats R, secured to theunder side of the frame. A rocking shaft F, supported at the top of the body in suitable brackets or bearings f, is made of iron approximately as long as the body and at suitable distances has arms f2, to the ends of which are attached, by means of clevises f, chains E E. The chains E have their lower ends attached to the free sides of the drop-doors, and the chains E are made double at `the lower ends, having a branch e, so that two doors are thus connected to one lifting-arm. Plates g are secured to one of each pair of doors so connected by the chains, so that when the door having the plate is latched and held up the door will support the next adjacent without depending upon the chains for support. A cap-piece a. is provided to cover the joint over the hinge of each pair of doors to prevent any matter from lodging and clogging the doors.
To the outsides of the body rocking arms D are pivoted near their centers by abolt 4 and have at the lower ends a latchin'g-hook which engages with a bar g, supporting the doors after being drawn up. These arms are connected, so as to move simultaneously, by a rod C, which is operated by a lever G, secured to a shaft h, extending across the front end of the body. This. shaft is supported by carriers h'. To each of the shafts F is secured an arm f3 at the forward end of the wagon-body, which is operated upon by means of a lever H, having connecting-rods t' 'i' to the said arms. This operating-lever is supported in position by means of an axle-bolt Z, attached to the end of the body, and is provided with a suitable latch engaging in notches out into a rack or quadrant I, secured to the upper portion of the body. To avoid interference with the axles, the hinges next each end of the body are placed in a vertical line above the bolster b.
In the arrangement above described it will be noticed that the arms f2 are horizontal and IOO eXtend inward when the doors are closed, the operating-chains being on the inside of the wagon-body, and to dump a load by allowing the doors to drop the arms move downward.
In the modified form of my apparatus hereinafter described I arrange the arms f2 so that when the doors are closed the arms stand in a vertical position, extending upward above the shaft F, and when lowered to dump the load they move downward and outward from the wagon-body, the chains being entirely on the outside, where they cannot interfere with the load. In this arrangement instead of the arms f3 I sometimes use a segment of a grooved pulley L, to which is attached a rope or chain K K', connecting it with the lever II.
A further modification of my device provides a means by which a part only of the load may be dumped, while a part is retained in the wagon, and consists of substituting, instead of the rod C, a rod M and M', having a hook m engaging in an eye m', which when in connection form a continuous rod, but when disconnected permit the forward part of the load to be dumped without affecting the rear portion.
In operation the lever II is released and moved so that the lifting-chains will be slack, and the lever G is drawn forward, which releases the doors, allowing them to drop by gravity, after which the lever H is moved in the opposite direction, raising the doors, when the lever G is reversed, bringing the latches again into contact with the doors and supporting them.
Various changes may be employed for effecting the particular movement of the levers, such as attaching the arms D in a reverse position, so that the lever G would be operated in the opposite direction, as shown, and may be made without departing from the intent and purpose of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination in a dumping-wagon of the body A, the drop-door floor-sections B having hinges d and rods g2 hanging said doors to said body; the chains E and E, the latter having bifurcated ends e connecting said sections; the longitudinal shafts F eX- tending the length of the said body and mounted rotatably at the top at or near the sides thereof, and provided with the liftingarms f2 connecting with the upper ends of said chains; the lever H pivoted near its lower end to the front end of said body approximately central on said front, said lever having at its upper portion a thumb-latch engaging with the notched quadrant I; the arms f3 secured to the forward end of said shafts F and connected operatively to said leverH by means of the rods 7l the rocking arms D pivoted to said body, each provided at its lower end with a catch-hook engaging with the bar g attached to each of said sections; the rods C connecting the upper ends of said levers D 3 the rocking shaft 7@ supported across the front end of said body; the lever G secured at its lower end to one end of said shaft h and connected to the forward end of one of said rods C, and a shorter companion lever having its lower end secured to the opposite end of said shaft h and its upper end connected to the forward end of the other of said rods C, all operating substantially as shown and described.
2. In a dumping-wagon, the combination of the doors having the latch-bolts and provided with the lifting mechanism substantially as described; the rocking levers pivoted at each side of the body, the lower ends of which have a hook engaging with said latch-bolts; the longitudinal operating-rods connecting with the upper ends of said levers, said rods being made in two sections having the hook and eye for connecting or disconnecting said sections, and means for manipulating said rods, as shown and for the purposes set forth."
3. In a dumping-wagon, the combination of the body A; the drop-doors B supported at one side by hinges d through which pass the rods g2 which are supported by the cleat-s R attached at under side of the frame of said body; the plates g attached to one of each pair of doors; the bars g secured to the free ends of said doors; the rocking arms or levers D having hooks at their lower ends supporting said bars g and doors; the connectingrods M M' operating said levers D, said rods being provided with the hook m and eye m for connecting said rods or detaching them, and the means herein described for operating said rods M' and M and for lifting said doors, substantially as shown and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY DANIEL LORASH.
