SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,972, dated October 6, 1896.

Application filed June 13, 1896- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CLEMENT EN GEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to toys, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to interest and amuse the young.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved toy, and Fig. 2 a plan View thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a base plate or board 5, in the bottom of which is formed a chamber 6, above which is a standard 7, which is provided with a central bore or passage 8, which opens at the bottom, and said standard is provided near the top with side openings or slots 9, which communicate therewith. I also provide a rod 10, which is placed vertically in the central bore or passage 8, and the bottom of which is curved outwardly and upwardly to form an arm 11, on which is placed a button or head 12, and said arm 11 passes through an opening 13, formed in the base plate or board 5, adjacent to the standard 7, said opening being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. I also provide a figure 14, which is intended to represent a man, and said figure is provided with arms 15, and said figure and the rod 10 are connected by a yoke of wire or similar material, provided with a cross-head 16, having acrank 17, which is pivotally connected with the rod 10 at 18 by means of a loop or yoke formed on said rod, and the sides 18 of the yoke are passed through the arms 15 of the figure and pivotally connected with said figure at 19,

the ends thereof being bent inwardly at right angles and passed into a transverse bore or passage 20, formed in the body of the figure, and the sides of the cross-head 16 are passed through the sides of the standard 7 near the top thereof.

111 the normal position the man represented by the figure 14 is standing upon the base plate or board 5, and by pressing sharply and quickly on the button or head 5 the figure will be caused to turn a handspring, in which position said figure will be standing on the side of the standard 7, opposite the position occupied in Fig. 1, and then by pressing again on the button or head 11 said figure will be caused to turn a handspring backward, and this operation may be continued as often and as rapidly as desired.

This device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination in a toy, of a base plate or board, a vertical standard mounted thereon, a rod or wire which passes through said standard, and is provided at its lower end with an outwardly-curved and upwardly-directed arm, on which is mounted a button or head, said standard being also provided at its upper end with slots or openings in its opposite sides, and with a yoke of wire or similar material, which is connected with the upper end of said wire or rod, and the sides of which are pivotally connected with a figure, said figure being designed to represent a man, and provided with armsthrough which the sides of said yoke pass, and said base plate or board being provided beneath said standard In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of June, 1896.
