UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERIC 0. SJOLANDER, OF CEDAR BAYOU, TEXAS.
STEM FOR TOBACCO-PIPES OR CIGAR-HOLDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,461, dated September 29, 1896. Ap lication filed February 14,1896. smart. 579,289. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERIC 0. SJOLANDER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Oedar Bayou, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Stem for Tobacco-Pipes or Cigar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a stem for tobaccopipes and cigar-holders constructed to arrest nicotine and prevent the same from being communicated to the mouthpiece, and the object in view is to provide a stem consisting of detachable members to facilitate cleansing when foul.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a stem constructed in accordance with my invention applied in the operative position to the bowl and mouthpiece of a pipe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the parts of the stem disconnected.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
The stem embodying my invention is of serpentine or S shape with any desired number of laps or folds, and it consists of a plurality of straight tubular sections 1, connected in series by tubular elbows 2, said elbows having straight arms 3 of sufiicient interior diameter to receive the extremities of the straight sections 1, and the latter being of even diameter throughout, whereby the stem may be extended or contracted, as desired, to increase or diminish the interior dimensions. Arranged in each straight or intermediate section 1 is a filling 4 of absorbent material, such as sponge, said filling being fitted snugly in the bore of the section to prevent smoke from pipe-bowl 6, and the extremity 7 of the stem is adapted for connection, as shown in the drawings, with a mouthpiece 8.
It will be seen thatwhen foul the members of the stem may be disconnected and cleansed with facility, the absorbent filling being removed and replaced by fresh material. In addition to the absorbent filling the stem contains an extended narrow air-channel, and the nicotine which is not absorbed by the filling will be deposited upon the walls of said air-channel and will thus be arrested before reaching the mouthpiece.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing anyof the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- A stem for pipes and cigar-holders having a serpentine passage and comprising a plurality of straight tubular sections, and elbows connecting the straight sections or members in series and provided with straight arms to receive the extremities of said sections or members whereby the stem may be extended or contracted longitudinally to vary the length of the passage, said elbows being removable to give access to the interiors of the straight sections for the introduction of absorbent cotton, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
