PHILIP HANO, OF NET/V YORK, N. Y.
MANIFOLD MEMORANDUM BOOK OR PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,305, dated September 22, 1896.
Application filed July 28, 1896. Serial No. 600,257. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP l-IANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifold Memorandum Books or Pads, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to obtain a book or pad for duplicate notation orders or memoranda of sales or other transactions or matters, and. which book is readily and cheaply manufactured, easily manipulated, and which can be readily supplied with the requisite pad or sheets.
The book or pad embodying the invention comprises covers, one of which is provided with a tapped stud and with a flap having a perforation for registering with said stud and for the passage of a screw-stem holding the flap to the stud, the pad being suspended from the stud.
By providing the screw stem, which is screwed to one of the covers, with a head or flange under which the other cover can be slipped or engaged the book or covers can be held closed against accidental opening.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the book or pad open. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the book or pad closed. Fig. 3is a section along 00 00, Fig. 2.
The covers 1 and 2 are hinged to or can be closed and opened toward and from one another, as shown, being joined by a back portion 3. Secured to cover 2 is a stud 4. This cover 2 has also a flap comprising the portions 5 and 6. The flap portion 6 is perforated, as at 7, said perforation or eyelet being adapted to register with or to receive therein the stud 4. Vhen the flap 5 6 has its perforation or eyelet 7 passed over stud 4, a screw-stem 8 can be inserted into the stud, said stud being suitably tapped for the reception of the screw-stem 8.
The book or covers contain a memorandum-pad comprising sheets. of writing or memorandum paper and a sheet of manifolding-paper, or, as it is generally known, carbon-paper. A pad-sheet is indicated at 9 10 11, and a carbon sheet or paper is indicated at 12. This pad and carbon-sheet are perforated,
so as to he slipped over or suspended from the stud 4.
Then the pad with carbon-sheet has been slipped over or suspended to stud 4 and the screw-stem 8 has been passed through flap 5 6 into such stud, the various sheets are held securely in place, being suspended to stud 4, from which they cannot slip off in consequence of being held to the stud by the flap portion 6 and screw-stem 8.
To make a duplicate memorandum, as, for example, a duplicate notation of a sale, a padsheet 9 10 11 has the portion 10 11 doubled over or laid onto the exposed or top face of carbon-sheet 12. A notation or pencil memorandum then made onto the overlaid sheet portion 10 11 will be reproduced onto the sheet portion 9 10 underlying the carbonsheet 12. The sheet 9 1O 11 can then be detached or ripped off stud 4, and said sheet being torn or separated in two at 10 the separated sheet portions 9 and 11 can be utilized or preserved, as required, one of said 'sheet portions 11 containing an original or pencilmemorandum, as noticed, and the sheet portion 9 containing a duplicate or carbon reproduction of such original memorandum.
The screw-stem 8 has a finger button or flange 13 for the manipulation of said stem. The cover 1 is adapted to have its free end or edge engaged to or slipped under the head or flange 13 when closing, so that the book or covers are held closed or secured against accidental opening, as when being carried in the pocket.
The device is simple in construction, readily made, and easily manipulated, since, when the pad is exhausted, a loosening or detaching of screw-stem 8 will free flap 5 6, which, being thrown back to expose stud 4, allows a fresh pad or series of suitably-perforated sheets to be slipped over or suspended to the stud 4. After such pad has been engaged to stud 4, the flap 5 6 being laid over onto such stud and the screw-stem being replaced or passed through flap 5 6 into stud 4, the device is ready for thereception or notation of duplicate memoranda on the portions 11 and 9 of each sheet. For convenience of separation each sheet 9 1O 11 may have a line of perforations at a suitable point, as 10, to enable the sheet portions 9 and 11, each contain- ICO ing a memorandum duplicate, to be readily separated.
The carbon-sheet 12, it is noticed, is suspended to the stud 4 or laid into place independently of the pad or sheets 9 10 11, so that if the carbon-sheet is used up or unservice able it can be taken off stud 4 and a fresh carbon-sheet inserted Without disturbing or destroying any of the sheets 9 1O 11. The carbon-sheet being loose from the covers and held detachably or reinovably in place such carbon-sheet is removable on simply loosening screw-stem 8, said carbon -sheet being neither secured nor stitched nor permanently connected to the pad or cover.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the book-covers of a tapped stud secured to one of the covers, a flap on said cover adapted to fold over the stud and having a perforation adapted to register with the stud, a screw-stem made to enter said perforation and stud, and a menuorandum-pad and manifoldingsheet suspended from the stud substantially as described.
2. The combination with the book covers of a tapped stud secured to one of the covers,
a flap on said cover adapted to fold over the stud and having a perforation. adapted to register with the stud, a screw-stem made to enter said perforation and stud, and a memorandum -pad and manifolding-sheet suspended from the stud, said screw-stem having an enlarged head and one of the covers being adapted to be engaged or slipped under said head to be held closed substantially as described.
The combination with the book-covers of a tapped stud secured to one of the covers, a flap on said cover adapted to fold over the stud and having a perforation adapted to register With the stud, a screw-stem made to enter said perforation and stud, and a inen1- orandum -pad and manifolding-sheet sus pended from the stud, said manifolding-sheet being loose or detached from the pad so as to be removable independently of said pad substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
PHILIP IIANO.
