Patented Sept.l 22, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES YV. LAWYER, OE BERKELEY SPRINGS, IVEST VIRGINIA.
y BUTTON.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,030, dated September 22, 1896.
Application-filed May 27, 1896. Serial No, 593,276. (No modell) To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES WV. LAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley Springs, in the county of Morgan and State of West `Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in buttons, the object of the same being to pro- Vide a button which is especially adapted to be applied to mens trousers and which will be securely held in place .without sewing.
The invention consists of a button made of a single piece of wire, coiled at one end to form the base of the button, having a shank projecting upwardly from the middle of said coil and a second coil forming the head of the button, the parts of the coil forming the base being slightly separated one from the other.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Figi. 3 is a bottom plan View.
l Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the dierent views.
The button is made of `a single piece of heavy wire, which is coiled at one end to form the base l, has a shank 2 projecting upwardly from the middle of said base, and has its head 3 formed by a second coil, as clearly shown in the drawings. The edges of the wire form ing the coil 3 are preferably welded or soldcred together, but those of the base l are slightly separated.
In applying my button to the trousers it is merely necessary to punch a hole through the material of which the trousers are made, insert the end of the coil l therethrough, and turn the sarne after the manner of inserting an ordinary spiral stud. When in place, it will be kept from pulling out by the engagement of the base `l with the under side of the goods, and the outer en'd or head may receive the button hole of anything which is to be attached to the trousers. If it is desired to remove the same, it can be readily done by reversing the operation just described.
rated and those ofthe wire forming the head being in close contact one with the other, sub- In testimony whereof I havesigned this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

stantially as and for the purpose described.`
Having now described my invention, what the wire forming the base being slightly sepa-
