ATENT OFFICE.
THEODOR GIBON, OF OLARKSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
APPARATUS FOR PACKING LEAF-TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,896, dated September 15, 1896. Application filed July 25, 1896. Serial No, 600,512. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODOR GIBoN, a sub ject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Olarksville, Montgomery county, Tennessee, have invented Improved Apparatus for Packing Leaf-Tobacco, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved apparatus for packing leaf-tobacco economically and rapidly.
The figure in the accompanying drawing is a side elevation, partly in section, of my im proved apparatus.
In carrying my invention into effect the leaf-tobacco is first packed in layers, preferably in detachable pressure, either separately in these hoops or together in a suitable hydraulic or screw or other press.
In my Patent No. 496,221, dated April 25, 1893, I described how the piled-up pressed cakes could be inclosed by building a hogshead around them.
My present invention is a means for carrying out this operation of inclosing the pressed cakes or layers of tobacco.
I make a cylindrical hogshead or barrel A of suitable size, open. at both ends, that is, without a head at either end; but I secure to the inside of the barrel, near the bottom, a rib, flange, or cleat a, preferably extending entirely around the inner face of the barrel. This internal rib is of such a size as to receive and sustain the bottom 13 of the barrel or hogshead when such bottom is dropped down through the barrel onto the rib. With this barrel is combined a means for gradually lowering the bottom B into place as the cakes of tobacco are successively piled thereon.
Such means preferably consist of aplaten P, mounted upon a vertical screw S, the platen being of such a diameter as to readily pass through the barrel without contact with the hoops, and subjected to .inclosed by the rib,
annular rib a.
The screw S passes through guides g 9,
carried by the flooring or frame E, on which the barrel is placed, and between the guides is a feed-nut f, adapted to the thread or threads of the screw S and forming part of a wheel F. By turning this wheel in one direction or another the platen P, carrying the bottom board 13, may be raised or lowered. A friction brake-lever D may be combined with the wheel F to stop it in any desired position. a r In using the described apparatus the barrel or hogshead A, with its annular rib a, is placed in to near the top and the bottom piece B placed on it. Then the pressed cakes or layer 0 of tobacco are placed in position on the bottom piece and one upon another, and as the layers are successively put in place the platen and bottom board are lowered until when the barrel is full the bottom piece will be resting on the rib a, the platen will have passed out, and it only remains to fasten a head on the upper end of the barrel.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described means. for packing tobacco, consisting of a barrel provided with an annular internal rib at the bottom in combination with a platen for supporting the bottom piece of the barrel, the platen being of such diameter as to pass through the space and means for gradually lowering the platen in the barrel as the cakes of tobacco are successively piled on, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have. signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
