GARMENT-STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,733, dated September 15, 1896. Application filed March 25, 1896. Serial No. 584,731. (No model.)

Be it known that I, LAURA l3. CADMUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Somerset, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Stretchers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.

My invention consists of a garment-stretcher adapted more particularly for what is known as a union undergarment, composed of a shirt and pair of drawers in one, the same being constructed as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The figure represents a side elevation of a garment-stretcher embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawing, A designates cross-bars, which are pivotally connected, as at B, at their places of crossing with the hanger O.

D designates the pieces which are aside of the cross-bars A, the same being connected at their lower ends with the lower ends of the cross-bars A by the pivotal straps E. The upper ends of the cross-bars are connected with the side pieces D, below the upper ends of the latter, by the screws or bolts F.

G designates the upper arm-pieces, and H designates the lower arm-pieces, said pieces G being connected at their inner ends with the top of the hanger O by the pivots H, and near said ends with the side pieces D by the bolts or screws J, it being noticed that said arm-pieces G are provided with a number of openings K, into either of which the bolts or screws J may be inserted for purposes of lateral adjustment of the devices, as will' be hereinafter described. The outer ends of the arm-pieces G and H are connected by the cords or straps L, which are of an elastic nature. It will be seen that the outer sides of the pieces D have recesses M therein, so that the upper portions of said pieces accord with the body of an undershirt, while the lower portions of said pieces and of the crosspieces A accord with the legsof a pair of drawers, said portions being continuous in accord with what is known as a union undergarment. By removing the screws or bolts J the side pieces may be moved out or in laterally to increase or decrease the width of the frame of the stretcher. The upper arm-pieces G may be raised and lowered on the pivots H, said pieces when raised carrying with them the side pieces D, which, being pivotally connected with the cross-pieces Aby the straps E, extend the entire frame laterally. The upper ends of the cross-pieces are then fixed or fastened upon the posts, bolts, or screws F, thus securing the frame at the size for which it is set at the openings K. ln'tlie movements of the side pieces D the crosspieces A turn on the pivots B and the straps E, the latter changing their angles with those of the side pieces.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

1. A garment-stretcher consisting of the hanger O, the side pieces D having the recesses M, the cross-bars A pivoted together and to one end of said hanger G, the links E pivotally connected with the lower ends of said bars A and said side bars D, the upper ends of said bars A being pivoted to said bars D near the tops of the same, the upper armpieces G, pivoted to said hanger and having an adjustable pivotal connection with said side pieces, the lower arm-piece H pivoted to said side pieces and the cords L connecting the outer ends of said arm-pieces, said parts being combined, substantially as described.

2. A garment-stretcher having a hanger with cross-bars pivoted thereto, side pieces having pivotal connections with the ends of said cross-bars, upper arm-pieces pivoted to said hanger and having adjustable'pivotal connections with said side pieces, lower arm- 1' pieces pivotally connected with said side" pieces, and elastic straps connecting the outer ends of said arm-pieces, said parts being combined, substantially as described.

3. A garment-stretcher consisting of a hanger, cross-bars pivoted to one end thereof, side bars pivotally attached to the ends of said cross-bars, upper arm-pieces pivoted to said hanger and side bars and lower armpieces pivoted to said side bars, said armpieces having connection near their outer ends.
