IMPROVED BELT-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of LettersiPatent No. 56,767, dated July 3l, 1866Y To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WORLEY LEAs, of Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Gouplin gs 5 and I do hereby declare the following to' be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which are made a part ot' this specification, and in which- Figures l and 3 are plans of a belt with my invention applied. tudinal sections of the same on the line w .'12, Figs. l and 2.

My invention consists in connecting' the ends of a belt by means of two bent metallic plates and a link, the bent plates having sockets to receive the two long sides of the link, and thereby form4 a joint-connection which permits the necessary deflection of the belt in circulating around a drum or pulley,`and at the same time affords a cheap and strong connection.
So far as this connection is concerned, the plain oblong link may be sufficient in carrying out the above feature of my invention; but
the invention further consists in providing the link with a longitudinal central rib or back, which gives a continuous unbroken character to the belt, and constitutes a point oi' attachment for stripsor pieces of leather -or analogous material, which are applied, as hereinafter described, so as to prevent slipping when the coupled portion of the belt is on the pulley or drum.
The following description will enable others skilled inthe art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same.
The drawings represent four sections or parts of a belt, A B C G', which are connected by the links D D and the lmetallic plates E E E E, all of which are formed and applied alike, the same being sprung upon the ends of the belt and securely fastened thereto byrivets. One of the links D, as will be seen from Figs. 2 and 4 are longi-A Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, is simply a plain open link, the two sides of which constitute the pintles which work loosely within the contiguous ends of the bent plates .E E, which thus form the leaves of 'a double hinge. At this point of connection between the two belts slipping is prevented by means of the strip of leather or analogous material, F, which is secured upon and over that side of the hinge which moves upon the pulley or drum.
The link at the other point of connection represented in the drawings, Figs. 3 and 4, is of peculiar form, the same having a rib or back, D', extending longitudinally of the link and jointed theretoY at both ends.. This rib assists in the attachment of the leather strip F', which is passed under the rib, brought'up on the two opposite sides of the belt, and fastened by rivets. The side ofthe rib D' which comes lagainst the pulley'is covered by a strip of leather, G, which is held on by screws g, which pass one within the other from the two opposite sides of the ribs and strip, as represented. The rib or back D' affords a continuons 4bearing and a convenient attachment forv the strip G.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A belt-coupling consisting of' a link, D, and bent metallic plates E E, connected together so as to form a joint at each side of the link, substantially in the manner specified.
2. The rib or back D', formed on the link D, and employed to form a continuous bearing for the leather, as described.
3. In combination with a belt-coupling constructed as herein described, the leather covering F, F', and G, to prevent slipping when the coupling is upon the pulley.
To the above specification of my improvement in belt-couplings I have signed my hand this 23d day of March, 1866.
