Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
A. L. JEWELL, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINKLING-SYRINGES FOR GARDENS. u
l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,757, dated July 31, i866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that L ALvAN L. JEWELL, of Waltham, in the county ot Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful Improvement in Garden or Rose- J et Syringes: and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, which denotes a longitudinal section of a syringe as provided with my invention.
In such drawing, A denotes the barrel, and B the piston, of the syringe. Instead of making the discharging terminus or end of the barrel with a stationary foraminous head or rose-jet constructed and applied in the usual way, I form it with a circular opening, a, of a diameter lessthan the internal diameter of the head, and I apply to such opening a movable foraminous valve or disk, b, having a diameter somewhat larger than that of the said opening, and being supported by and so as to be capable of sliding back and forth on a pin, c, arranged in the axis of the barrel and projected from a bar or bail, d, extending back from the end ot' the syringe, or a screw-cap, e, constituting 4such end. There should be an annular space, f, around the disk, or between it and the inner circumference of the barrel, in order that when the disk may be drawn back by the suction of the piston, while the syringe end is immersed in a liquid, the liquid may be drawn through the opening a and the spacef.
The foraminous disk and thelend ot' the cap e are like a valve and its seat, except that the disk is perforated with numerous holes to eject the fluid in spray or many line jets while the piston is in the act of being forced into the barrel of the syringe.
The object of the movable foraminous valvedisk and its seat-opening, arranged and applied to the cap or discharge end of the syringe in manner as set forth, is to enable the syringe to bel charged with a fluid with more expedition and ease than it can be filled when having a stationary foraminous disk or rose-jet.
The piston has its head h constructed in the ordinary manner-that is, of two leather cups, i fi, placed between one stationary and i one movable metallic disk, such disks being shown at 1c l. The rear oneis fastened on the pistonrod m concentrically with it, the front one being movable on the rod, which Vis provided with a screw and nut, as shown at o.
Between each of the leather cups and its I claim as my invention or improvement- The combination and arrangement of the foraminous valve, its opening, and seat with a syringe, the same being to operate substantially as described.
' A. L. JEWELL.
