Description
E. H. JACKSON.
Dumping Car.
Patented Julv 31. 1.866

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. JACKSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED DUMPl NG-CAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,756, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. JACKSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massach usetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumping Cars or Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the several figures.
The object of my invention is to provide for a ready and rapid discharge of the contents of a dumping car or wagon; and the invention consists in attaching to each side of the car or wagon a hub or projection in such a manner that when the loaded car is supported by the said projections on proper hearin gs and rendered independent of the support of the lower main wheels it will turn over upon the axis of the said projections and discharge its contents, and when the contents are so discharged the car will resume its upright position.
Referring to the drawings, 0 represents a car or wagon, which may be of any convenient size or form, and mounted upon wheels F, adapted to run upon a railway-track, as shown at E in Fig. 1.
Upon each side of the car and at a central point above the line of the axes of the lower wheels, F, is a hub or projection, D, upon which may be placed a roller or wheel. The position of this hub orprojection is such that when the empty car is supported by the same, independently of the main wheels F it will maintain its upright position; but when the car is loaded, or partially so, it will tilt over and discharge the contents.
The hubs or projections D may be removable or rendered adjustable as to height.
B represents an oblong frame to be placed over the point where it is designed to deposit the contents of the car. The said frame is entirely open below and in front, and its sides are of such a height and width as to admit the car 0 and receive the hubs or rollers D upon the upper edges of the same.
The track E, on which the car runs, extends only so far within the frame B as to allow the latter to receive the projections D, which then support the car upon the sides of the frame.
Instead of the frame being mounted on wheels, as represented, it may be made stationary and formed of two side pieces with openings at both ends, so that the car, when emptied of its contents, may pass off-upon another track at the opposite end of the frame. The forward movement of the car within the frame may be checked at any desiredpoint by means of pins or projections placed in the upper edges of the side pieces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. Attaching to the sides of a dumping-car a hub or projection, D, as and for the purpose substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a dumping-car provided with a hub or projection, ]D, on either side, with a frame, B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD H. JACKSON.
