Be it known that I,` W'ARREN II. TAYLOR, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Stamv ford, in the county of j-Faireld and State of 5 Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters, of which the following isa specication.
My invention relates to an improvement in transom-litters; and it isA composed of a suitable attaching-base carrying a pair of thumbpieces through which the rod passes and which are so secured at one end as to swing on an axis or axes perpendicular` to the base and a spring which forces the thumb-pieces upon the push-rod. The A thumb-pieces are provided withoutwardlyextending ears, so that when pressure is 'applied to them they are brought in parallel-planes, so that the push-rod can be movedeasily through them. In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of my device. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken onthe line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3is a front elevation. of another form of my device, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4 4. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of still another form of-my device, Vand Fig. 6 is a detail side view of the form shown in Fig. 5. In the said drawings, and referring more particularly to Figs. 1V to 4, 1 represents the push-rod, which is secured at one end to the transom in any preferred manner; 2, the pushplate, which issecured to the other end of the rod, and 3 guides which are secured by the flange 4 at any pointnonthe door-frame. 5V represents a casting formed with the part 6, which extends outward from the attachinganges 7. The part 6 is designed to hold the thumb-pieces 8, which are provided with the outwardly-extending ears 9, and in Fig. l I have shown the part 6 formed with a crossstrip 10,'which serves to bring the thumbpieces in parallel planes when forced together. The thumb-pieces are placed in the casting in a ,verticalfdirectiom soV as to swing on an axis or axes perpendicular to the'base, and an edge of leach thumb-piece is placed in 'grooves 13, which are formed on opposite 4out of parallelism land causes them to bind sides of the casting, and theyharehe ain/the groove by means of a spiral s 14",'iitting around the rod 1 and h end bent and fitting in a cut-o'iitallili the thumb-piece. In both of .the forms shown the cut-out 15 is formed in the side opposite the `groove, and the tendency of the spring is to force the thumb-pieces into the groove and out of parallelism, so as to cause them tolbind upon the rod 1. In Fig. 3, when the thumb-pieces are forced together, the ends ofthe spring bring them into parallel planes, and, as above stated, the cross-strip in thecasting' Fig. 1 bringsqthe thumb-pieces. in parallel planes in that form.l
InFig. 5 I do away with the casting and pivot the thumb-pieces directly` to the attaching-base 16, as shown at 17. In this'form, as Aigltheother two, the thumb-pieces arelprovided with the outwardly-extending ears, and theyare also provided with themprojelctions 18, which are formed with the curved cut-out portion 19, which bears against the pivotpoint opposite it when the thumb-pieces are brought together. This construction is. to bring the thumb-pieces in parallel planes when forced together. The coiled spring 20, which bears at each end against the thumbpieces, forces them out of parallelism, so as to cause them to bind on the rod 1.
Y Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and `,desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a transom-lifter, the combination of a suitable base or push-rod, a pair of thumbpieces, through which the push-rod passes, carriedbysaid base and arranged to rotate on pivots which are placed at right angles to saidmbase; and at either side'of saidfrod, a
spring 'placed between the thumb-piecesr for causing them to rotate on the` axes andibind upon lthe push-rod, and suitable means 1ocated between the axis end of one thumbpiece and the free end of the other thumbpiece for limiting their movement and bringing them into parallelism to allowthefrod to be pushed through them, substantially 'as shown and described.
