To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RUSSELL RYDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part, thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which, having been once filled and sealed, may be emptied of its contents, but cannot be refilled or reused without leaving evidence of the fact.

In the drawingsformin g part of this specification I have shown my improvement applied to a bottle, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the neck of the bottle sealed after the same has been filled. Fig. 3 represents a central vertical section of a modified form of the neck, and Fig. 4 a cross-section on the line 4 4 thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle A, having a neck B, which. is closed at the upper end, as shown at b, and in one side of which is formed a port or opening b and I also provide a cork, plug, or stopper D, which is suspended in or through the neck of the bottle by means of a cord, chain, or wire E, which is passed therethrough and secured therein and the end of which is carried out through a small hole or opening in the top or end I) of the neck of the bottle.

The cork, plug, or stopper D may be placed in the bottle in any desired manner, and, if preferred, the upper end I) of the neck may be secured in place after said cork or stopper has been inserted, but this feature of the construction forms no part of my invention.

The bottle is filled through the port or opening 5 in the neck B, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

After the bottle has been filled, the cork, plug, or stopper D is drawn upwardly within the neck into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it seals or closes the port or opening b and if a wire be employed for suspending the plug or stopper D the outer end thereof will be broken off and formed into a loop or ring, as shown at E but if a chain or cord be employed for this purpose the outer end thereof may be connected with a cross-bar or ring or similar device.

When it is desired to empty the bottle or discharge a portion of its contents, the plug or stopper D is drawn upwardly within the neck above the port or opening 11 after which the contents of the bottle may be discharged through said port or opening, and it will'be apparent that the plug or stopper D cannot be forced downwardly within the neck, so as to again close said port or opening, without breaking off the upper end thereof, and this would be proof of the fact that the bottle had once been used.

It is also evident that the bottlemay be again filled through the port or opening and be sealed by other means or in any desired manner, but this would also be proof of the fact that the bottle had once been used, for in the normal position thereof when first filled the port or opening 12 is left as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and is only closed by the plug or stopper D.

If a wire be used to suspend the plug or stopper D, it will be very small and flexible,

and, as is evident, cannot be used as a means for forcing said plug or stopper downwardly within the neck, and the same result will be accomplished by the use of a cord or string.

I may also place upon the bottle a label containing a description of the bottle and the object of the construction employed and of the method of its operation, or said information may be blown into the bottle or otherwise placed thereon, and, as will be understood, such information would be an additional safeguard, and the presence of the plug or stopper D above the port or opening b from which position it cannot be removed without breaking off the end of the neck, will always be proof of the fact that the bottle had once been used and that the seal thereof has been broken and the contents or a portion thereof discharged.

In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the port or opening I) in the side of the neck is inclosed by a spout U, which is open at the upper side, as shown at 19 and the neck of the bottle above said port or opening is enlarged, so as to form an annular shoulder G, and, in practice, when it is desired to open the bottle or to discharge its contents,-the plug or stopper D is drawn upwardly into the enlarged chamber, as shown in said figure, above said annular shoulder, in which said plug or stopper expands and in which it will be held by said annular shoulder, and thus additional means to prevent the plug or stopper from being forced downwardly is provided.

My invention is not limited to the form of the bottle or vessel or to the neck thereof, 1

and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad vantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a bottle devoid of the usual neck-opening and having a filling and discharging opening only in the side of the neck a little more than a stopper length below the neck-top, of a stopper suspended 1 in said neck by a rod or cord passing through an orifice in said neck-top, said stopper being adapted to close the said discharge-opening and to be drawn clear of and above it, as herein shown and described.
