W. J. SLYDER.v UMBRELLA FIXTURE.
No. 567,009. Patented Sept. 1, 1896.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM J. SLYDER, OF TROY, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HEMAN F. DOUGLAS AND AUGUSTUS G. STOUDER, OF SAME PLACE.
UMBRELLA-FIXTU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,009, dated September 1, 1896. Application filed July 23, 1896. serial No. 600,280. (No model.)
To @513 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SLYDER, of Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in canopy tops or umbrellas for wheeled vehicles, and has for its object the production of a simple and highly efficient fixture composed of a minimum number of parts which can be easily and permanently secured together, and by means of which the center of the umbrella will be directly over the heads of the occupants of the vehicle, affording the proper protection in front as well as in rear.
The invention comprises a fixture having two parts, a notcher and a runner, provided with overlapping skeleton-like ends, which are interlocked by the angular end of the supporting-standard, a set-screw or its equivalent binding said parts to said standard.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a view in perspective illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of the notcher. Fig. 3 is a view of the runner. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the supporting-standard. 7
Referring to the drawings, A designates the supporting-standard of a canopy top or umbrella, the upper end a of which is bent to form a right-angular horizontal arm a, which is designed to extend forward so as to overhang the seat of the vehicle, said standard at its lower end being secured, as customary, to the rear of said seat. From the under side of this arm a projects a short lug a B is the notcher. It consists of a round or cylindrical body having an upper notched flange Z), to which the ribs b of the frame b are secured, the lower portion of said body being slightly bulged, as at If, and provided with a transverse hole 6 to accommodate the arm a, on which it is designed to fit. The lower reduced end of this body has a small hole or recess 1) formed therein.
0 is the runner, the body cl of which is round or cylindrical, and provided at its lower end with a notched flange d to accommodate the bracing-ribs 61 The upper end d of this runner is of skeleton form, that is, it is provided with two spaced-apart rings or loops d having upper central flanges d which overhang and are parallel with lower flanges d. The contour of the inner opposite faces of the rings or loops (1 conform to the lower bulged portion of the notcher, which is designed to fit snug between said rings of the runner when the latter and said notcher are interlocked by the arm a extending through the rings and the hole 6 D is a clamping-screw which extends upwardly through therunner, so that the upper end will engage the hole or recess 11 of the notcher and serve to firmly and securely clamp the two parts B and O against the arm of the supporting-standard by forcing them. in opposite directions. A notch or recess 6 in one of the flanges d accommodates the lug a which serves to hold the runner in position.
From what has been said it will be seen that the two parts, the notcher and runner, have overlapping apertured or skeleton-like ends, which are held interlocked by the arm of the supporting-standard. Any suitable clamp will suffice for binding these parts on the standard; but I prefer the screw, which will engage both parts and force them into firm contact with the standard.
The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and it will be readily observed that I have produced a fixture for a canopytop or umbrella that is extremely simple in construction, composed of a minimum number of parts, and is capable of being easily secured in place, that the cost of manufacture is greatly reduced, and the parts are not liable to readily get out of order.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a support, of a notcher and runner having overlapping parts, held together by said support, and means for binding said parts, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a support, of a notcher having a lower aperture, a runner having an upper apertured portion designed to coincide with said aperture of said notcher, said support being extended through said coincident apertures, and a binding-screw, substantially as set forth.
3. A canopy-top or umbrella fixture comprising a supporting-standard having an upper horizontal arm, a notcher having a lower opening to accommodate said arm, a runner having upper openings also designed to accommodate said arm, and a binding-screw engaging said runner and notcher, as set forth.
4E. The combination with the standard having an upper, forwardly extended arm, a notcher having a rounded body the lower por tion of which is bulged and provided with a transverse hole, a runner having a rounded body an d a central thread-hole, upper spacedapart rings between which said bulged portion of said notcher is designed to fit, and a binding-screw working in said hole of said runner and engaging the lower end of said notcher, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with the standard having an upper angular arm, and a lower lug, of the runner depending from said arm having a recess to accommodate said lug, a notcher extending upwardly from said arm, and a screw for binding said notcher and runner against said arm, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
