Description

lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ FRANCIS ARNOLD,'OF HADDAM NECK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED MEAL AND FLOU`R SIFTER.
Specification forining part of Letters Patent No. 56.692, dated July 31, 1866.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS ARNOLD, of Haddam Neck, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meal and Flour Sitters 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters ot' ret'- erence marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
A represents the body of the sifter, which is made of wood and in the form shown. Wlithin the sifter-boX A, and at about the center of the same, is placed the semicircular sieve B. This sieve is made of the ordinary forni, and is connected tothe sifter-box by means of nails or screws, which pass through the bands a, a, which arebound around the edges of the same. This sieve can be taken from the hoX whenever it is desired to use a ner or coarser sieve.
On the inner sides ot the sieve-box A, and at the two ends, are secured the eccentricshaped metallic plates E and E. These plates are pivoted to the sitter-box by a screw or pin, x, and readily turn thereon. The under portion of each of these plates are oblong slots, b b b, while the upper points are provided with circular openings c c, as shown in Figure 2.
Within the slots b are placed the paddles C,
which extend. lengthwise of the box A and t snugly against sieve B.
D D represent two square paddles, which are set in the openings C C of the eccentrics E and E, and also extend lengthwise of the box.
F represents the adjust-able handle which revolves the sitter-paddles. This handle is placed in a band, c, formed in the eccentric E for that purpose.
In the use of this meal and our sitter the meal or our is placed in the box and the handle is worked back and forth, which turns the eccentrics E and E', causing the paddles C and D to sift the meal and flour through the sieve.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic plates E E', connecting the paddles C and D, in combination with the adjustable sieve B and handle F, when arranged and used as and for the purposes set forth.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence ot" two witnesses.
FRANCIS ARNOLD.
Witnesses CORNELIUS BRAINARD, J oHN H. RUSSELL.
