SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,832, dated September 1, 1896.

Beit known that I, HENRY WIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HitchingPosts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bitching-posts, and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction whereby the post may be readily set in any desired position, as, for instance, over a gutter or on any kind of a pavement, and which Will serve to readily permit of the attachment of a horse. A pivoted yoke is provided, on the arms of Which are adjustable or sliding Weights. The arm to which the animal is to be attached is mounted to slide in this yoke and is provided with a spring acting thereon.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this speciiication, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bitching-post complete. Fig. 2 is a sectional vievr of the yoke and its support.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a post or support designed to be secured in any required position, and for this purpose I provide the rectangular base A at the corners with recesses a and with the guide-strips a', in Which recesses and guided by which strips are the legs or arms B, their lower ends being flanged, as shown at b, and their upper ends provided with longitudinal slots b. In the slots Work the screws C, which are designed to be adjusted therein to regulate the height of the post. It will thus be seen that the post can be readily secured in lany desired position,

and may be placed directly over a gutter, if required.

On the post near its upper end is secured a plate D, which is provided at opposite ends With the ears d, the body portion of the plate being provided With longitudinal slots d', through Which pass the screws D, which adj ustably hold the said plate to the post.

E is a shaft mounted for rotation in these ears or lugs on the plate, and mounted on the extended ends of said rod or shaft is the yoke F, having a tubular extension F', through Which passes the rod G, mounted to slide therein and having connected with its outer end a chain or rope H for the attachment of the horse. This rod slides through the arched brace H', connecting the arms of the yoke, the inner end of the rod being headed, as shown, and between this head and the arched brace is arranged a coiled spring I. The arms of the yoke are extended beyond the shaft on which it is mounted, and on these extensions are mounted to slide the Weights K, any suitable means being provided for preventing the displacement thereof. On the face of the post above the plate just described is a spring-catch M, designed to receive the sliding rod and hold the yoke and its attachments in a vertical position parallel with the post when not in use. This yoke being pivoted permits of its necessary movements and yet assuming its normal position after strain is removed from the extension thereof, and by reason of the bifurcated ends the same is allowed to swing past the post A, which it could not do Were the arms arranged in line With the post, as will be readily understood.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

lVhat is claimed as new is- 1. The combination With a post, of a plate secured thereto, a shaft supported in said plate, a yoke mounted on said shaft and adapted to have a bitching-strap secured thereto and having extensions, and Weights slidingly mounted on said extensions, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a post, of a plate roo secured thereto, a shaft supported in said plate, a yoke mounted on said shaft, and havV ing extensions,and Weights siidingly mounted on said extensions, and a eurved brace anda sliding rod passed therethrough and adapted to have a hitehing-strap secured thereto, substantially as described.

3. The combination with the post and a plate thereon, of a shaft mounted in said plate, a yoke mounted on said shaft and hav ing extensions,a tubular portion,and a curved brace, a rod mounted to slide through said tubular portion and brace and adapted to have a hitohing-strap secured thereto, a

spring between the inner end of the rod and 15 the brace, and Weights slidingly mounted on the extensions of the yoke, substantially as described.
