SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,605, dated August 25, 1896.
Application filed May 25, 1896i Serial No. 592,946. (No model) .To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN V. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Industry, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'lhill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in thill-couplings, the objects in view being to provide a coupling to which thills or shafts may be quickly engaged and disengaged, and when in engagement will be securely held against any accidental loosening.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represcuts in plan one manner of practising my invention, the thill-bolt being shown in the position it occupies when in engagement with the thill. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the t-hill-bolt withdrawn. Fig. 3 illustrates an attachment that maybe employed for carrying out my invention, the same being used in connection with a thill-coupling of ordinary construction. Fig. at is a sectional wlew of the same.

The usual clip-plate 1, designed to be secured to the axle by means of the ordinary clip (not shown) that passes through suitable holes formed in the clip-plate, has formed at its front edge forwardly-extending ears 2, the same being provided with transversely-alming circular bolt-holes 3. Formed integral with the clip-plate 1 and extending laterally therefrom and in line therewith and with the axle, an arm a, at the outer end of which there is located a forwardly-extending plate 5, at whose front end there is located an enlargement 6. This enlargement 6 is in line with the circular bolt-holes 3, provided with a rectangular bolt-hole 7 and at a right angle thereto it is further provided with a threaded perforation 8, in which is mounted a thumbscrew 9.
1O designates the thill-bolt, and the same consists of a cylindrical. portion 11, adapted to fit and pass through the circular openings 3, and a rectangular portion 12, adapted to fit and slide within the rectangular opening 7 of the enlargement 6. Near the outer end of the rectangular portion 12 a transverse recess 13 is formed in the upper side of the same, and at the inner side of the enlargement 6 a boss or collar 14: is formed on the bolt.
Instead of having the arm 4 and its plate 5 formed integral with the clip, I may employ a plate 15, (illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4,) at the front end of which the enlargement 6 is produced. In either in stance the result is practically the same, and in order to secure the thill-iron in position between the ears 2 the thumb-sorew 9 is loosened so as to Withdraw its lower end from the groove 13. The bolt can then. be retracted to the position shown in Fig. 2. The thill-iron is inserted between the ears 2, as indicated in Fig. 1 by dotted lines, the bolts slid to the position shown in said figure, and the thumb-screw rotated so that its lower end will enga gewith the recess 13, and thus the bolt is locked against any possible disengagement. By loosening the screw and withdrawing the bolt the thill-iron may be removed, and by running the screw down upon the bolt the same is locked out of position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a thill-coupling comprising alining ears having circular openings, of a plate supported at one side of the same and in line therewith and having an angular perforation in line with those in the cars, a thill-bolt arranged in the perforations for reciprocation and comprising a cylindrical and an angular portion adapted to conform to said perforations, and a thumb-screw arranged in the plate and adapted at its inner end to engage a recess formed in the bolt, substantially as specified.
2. The combination wit-h a thill-coupling comprising a pair of cars having circular holes, of a plate located at one side of the same and having an enlargement provided with a reetangular opening alining with the openings in the ears, a bolt having a rectangular portion loosely fitting the opening in the enlargement and provided near its outer end with a recess in its upper side, and at its inner end having a cylindrical portion adapted to be inserted in the openings in the ears and provided with a stop or collar, and a thumbserew threaded in an opening in the enlarge- 10 ment and adapted to engage with the recess in the 'bolt, substantially as specified.
