BOOT-BLACKING APPLIANCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,264, dated August 18, 1896. Application filed April 28, 1896- Serial No- 589,413. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ALONZO B. WYBURN, of Onset, in the county of Plymouth and State of l\lassacht1setts,have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Boot-BlackingAppliances,of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a combined reservoir and brush for applying liquid blacking or dressingto boots and shoes, and adapted to be packed or carried in a trunk without liability of leakage of the contents.

Theinvention consistsin the improvements which I will nowproceed to-describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved boot-blacking appliance, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in both the figures.

In carrying out my invention I provide a reservoir to contain liquid blackin g or dressing, said reservoir comprising a tubular body portion a, a removable bottom piece I), which is engaged with the body portion C6 by means of a screw-threaded flange b, engaging a corresponding thread on the body a, said bottom piece having a packing disk or piece 6 which forms a tight joint between the body a and the bottom Z), and a conical mouthpiece 0, secured to the opposite end of the body a. The outer end of the mouthpiece 0 forms a contracted outlet for the reservoir, which outlet is normally closed by means of a valve d, located within the mouthpiece and pressed outwardly by a spring against the tapering inner surface thereof. To the valve is affixed a rod or stem 01, which projects outwardly beyond the mouthpiece c.

6 represents a spring which bears at one end on the head of the stem d and at the other end on the mouthpiece c, said spring normally holding the stem and valve in the posi tion shown in Fig. 2, the valve being thus caused to tightly close the mouthpiece. The

stem d passes through a guide f, aifixed to the mouthpiece c.

g represents a brush which is affixed to the mouthpiece c and is so formed and arranged that all liquid escaping from said mouthpiece necessarily passes through the brush. The

brush is preferably bag-shaped, and composed of a suitable absorbent and porous material, such as felt. The mouth or neck of the bag is firmly attached to the outer portion of the mouthpiece c and clamped thereon by a wire or other fastening. The cavity formed by the interior of the bag is of sufficient size to accommodate the spring 6 and valve-stem d, as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be seen that when the brush is pressed against an external object, such as a boot or shoe, pressure is imparted through the brush to the stem d, the latter, with the valve, being thus moved inward and caused to liberate a portion of the blacking, which saturates the brush, the latter being then used to spread the blacking upon the surface of the boot or shoe.

It will be seen that to open the valve a direct inward pressure lengthwise of the stem cl must be exerted on the stem, and that when the side portions of the brush are being applied to the boot or shoe to spread the blacking thereon there is no displacing pressure exerted upon the valve-stem. The device may therefore be freely used without liability of liberating an excess of blackin g, a special movement being required to liberate blacking, which movement differs from the ordinary movements naturally employed in spreading the blacking.

It represents a cap or cover removably secured to the outer end of the reservoir aand formed to inclose the brush 9.

It will be seen that this appliance may be held in any position without liability of releasing the blacking. Hence it can be safely packed in a trunk.

I do not limit myself to the details of construction here shown, and may variously modify the same without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim- An appliance of the character specified, comprising a tubular body screw-threaded at one end; a bottom piece having a screwthreaded flange formed to detachably engage the threaded end of the body, said bottom piece having a packing-piece which is pressed against the end of the body by the engagement of the bottom piece therewith; a conical mouthpiece secured to the other end of attached to the mouthpiece and inclosing said the body, the outer end of said mouthpiece constituting the outlet of the reservoir formed by the said body, bottom, and mouthpiece; a guide aflixed to the mouthpiece and located outside the said outlet; a valve Within the mouthpiece having a stem projecting out- Wardly through said guide; a spring arranged to press the valve and its stem outwardly;
