METAL-BANDING IMPLEMENT."
PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,704, dated August 11, 1896.
Application filed November 18, 1895. Serial No. 669,242. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON F. srown, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal-Banding Implements, which will, in connection with the accompanying drawings, be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved metal-banding implement. Fig. 2 is a view the reverse of Fig. 1, the upper portion of the handles not being shown. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached view of the end portion of one of the levers and grip shown in Figs. land 2. Fig. 4: is a section as on line Z Z, Fig. 5 3 and Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but with the parts in a different position, as will be explained.
The object of this invention is to effect certain improvements in a metal-banding implement invented by Henry S. Bacon and patented by him July 12, 1887, No. 366,293; and it consists in certain improvements in the means for gripping the wire while it is being bound upon the package to which it is applied, as will be next herein specified, and then defined in the appended claims.
Referring again to said drawings, A represents one of the levers, upon which is secured one of the wire-grips.
B represents the other lever, which is pivoted upon stud f. i
C is a lever pivoted to A at D, and B is pivoted to it at f, and upon it is mounted the other wire-grip, to be explained.
E is a link pivoted to lever A at p and to lever B at F. Said levers A and B are pro-' videdwith suitable handles for manipulation.
The grips are shown at a and are turned up at their outer end so as to extend across levers A O, as shown. Said grips are held in place by screw 0, that passes through slot and is threaded in the lever, as shown, a washer (1 being placed between the head of screw 0 and the grip to afford a firm bearing for the head of the screw. Cams e, formed with stems f, are arranged, respectively, in grips ain openings m, formed in said grips, each cam being formed with a stem that extends through levers O B and A E, and which are respectively firmly locked in said levers B E by the pin l, that enters both the lever and said stem, so that every motion of the lever is imparted to the cam. In said cam are the recesses g, so as to leave a stud-like part h, which when the cam is rotated passes pin e, threaded in bar j of said grip, as shown. A small spring a, seated in grip ct and bearing against cam e, serves to open the grip when released from the action of the cam. The binding-wire is inserted between the turned-up end of the grip a and the end of the lever to which the grip is secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--= 1. The combination of levers A B and 0 provided with suitable handles; the lever A being also provided with a suitable grip and the lever B being pivoted to lever 0 provided with a like grip, and being pivoted to lever A :and the cams 6 arranged in grips a pivoted to levers A O, and interlocked in lever B and link E to move therewith to thereby actuate said grips as specified.
2. The combination of levers A, B, O, and the link E: the grips a mounted on levers A and .C and arranged to slide thereon, and the cams c seated in an opening in said grips and secured to lever B and link E; the screws t' threaded in each grip, and springs n arranged to act upon each grip and to bear against said cams, substantially as specified.
3. In combination with levers A and 0 arranged to operate as described, the grips a mounted upon said levers and each formed with an elongated opening it to receive screw is the cams e seated in openings in said grips and secured by their stud f locked by small pin Z, a spring n seated in each grip and arranged to act against the cam, and screwt' arranged to act against stud h when the cam is moved by said levers: all substantially as specified.
