SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,376, dated August 4, 1896.
Application led January 28, 1895. Serial No. 536,425. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. BAIER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gar-Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My present invention relates to the class of car-seats set forth in my application for patent filed March 19, 1894, Serial No. 504,344, renewed April 12, 1895, Serial No. 545,525- that is to say, my present invention relates to the class of car-seats having two combined back and seat parts, which are folding and reversible, and which are folded inwardv toward each other, so as to bring them together in the act of being reversed.
' My present invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a front view or elevation of my improved car-seat. Fig. II is a side view. Fig. III is a detail cross-section of one of the side pieces of the frame.
The frame of the seat consists of twoend pieces 1, connected by a suitable brace 2. I have shown the end pieces as armless, though it is evident that they may be provided with arms or arm-rests, if4 preferred. Each end piece 1 is provided with a pair of downwardlyextending projections 3, as shown in Fig. II.
4 5 represent a pair of combined back and seat parts, which furnish either a back when placed edge up in an approximately vertical position or a seat when placed down in an I employ a pair of these combined back and seat parts in each car-seat. The parts are hinged together at 6, so that they may assume either their open position, as shown in Fig. I and by full lines in Fig. Il, or a folded position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. ll. The part 5 is connected to the projections 3 on its side of the seat by means of links '7, the links being pivoted or hinged to the part 5 at 8 and to the projections 3 at 9. The part 4 is connected to the projections 3 on its side of the seat by means of links 10, hinged or pivoted to the part 4 at 11 and to the projections 3 at 12.
The inner face of the part 1a of each end piece 1 is provided with a groove or way 13, that receives the connecting-pin 6 or other projection carried bythe parts 4 and 5 at the point where they are hinged together.
It is very desirable, where seats are placed close together, as, for instance, in a street-car, to provide for the seat and back parts to be folded inward toward each other,so as to bring them together, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. Il, so as to permit an inside occupant of the seat to pass out without the outside occupant having to crowd into the aisle of the car, which is frequently filled with people; and to provide a seat which will do this, and at the same time will be reversible, as is often required in street-cars, is the object of my invention, and this obj ect is accomplished by the construction I have described.
To fold the seat, the outer edge of the part 4 is raised or moved upwardly, which will cause the part 6 to move to the center 14 of the groove 13, and the parts 4 and 5 will be by this movement caused to assume the closed position shown by dotted lines in Fig. II, the links 7 and 10 producing this effect. If the seat is now to be moved back to using position without being reversed, the part 4 is brought back to its original position, which causes the part 5 to assume its original position, but if the seat is to be reversed the upper edge of the part 5 is drawn downwardly, which will move the bearing-points 6 to the opposite ends of the grooves 13 from where they are seen in Fig. II, and the part 5 will assume an approximately horizontal position, forming the seat part, while the part 4 will assume an approximately vertical position, forming the back part.
Each pair of links 7 and 10V are formed with iiat bearings or projections15, against which their respective parts 4 and 5 bear, as shown at 16, when these parts/4 and 5 are in their respective approximately horizontal positions. -Qm/ A seat th structed can be easily folded and reversed, and thus has two very desirable characteristics.
