UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEa CHARLES O. TANGEMAN, OF FERN BANK, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR ISSUING TICKETS, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,185, dated August 4, 1896. Application iiled June 3, 1896. Serial No. 594,111- (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern,-
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. TMIGE- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fern Bank, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Issuing Tickets, dac., of which the following is a specification.
The ordinary method of limiting tickets by punching or stamping has been found unsatisfactory, as it is an easy matter to deface the stamp or ll up a punch-mark and repunch or restamp the ticket to extend its limit.
The object of my invention is to provide means for issuing a ticket which cannot be changed in its date and means whereby a portion of a ticket-blank is retained by the selling-agent, thus enabling him to tell the exact number of tickets and the kind of tickets issued in a given time without auditing the entire number of tickets remaining unsold; and my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lisa side elevation of my device, the table or base being partially in section; Fig. 2, a plan view of the device; Fig. 3, a plan view of a ticket-blank, and Fig. 4 a plan of an issued ticket.
In the blank the starting-point, the terminal-point, and the date of sale will be indicated upon both the ticket and stub. The ticket contains three columns, each running lengthwise of the ticket, in parallel lines, but offset from each other so that neither column is opposite the other. One column contains a series of figures representing consecutive years, another a series of abreviations or other characters indicating consecutive months, and the third column a series of ligures representing consecutive days of the month. In issuing tickets from this blank, the blank must be torn upon oset lines so that the date of sale will be represented upon the margin. For tearing the blank in this manner I provide the following mechanism:
A is a base upon which is mounted in suitable brackets a rod B.
C is a swinging frame pivotcd upon rod B. Extending from the swinging frame are three straight-edges D, D', and D2, one overlapping the other, and longitudinally adjustable on the frame B. In the form shown these straight-edges are clamped to frame C by thumb-nuts d, adapted, when loosened, to slide in a longitudinal slot c in frame c, so
that either may be locked to the frame at any desired point. Each of the straight-edges is provided with a cutting edge d, having an offset (Z2, preferably at right angles to the longitudinal edges, all the cutting edges being in the same plane.
The frame C is adapted to swing into a position where the cutting edges rest upon base A, adjacent to an opening a adapted to receive the stub. For holding the straightedges normally in raised position I provide springs E, Wound on rod B, and having one end secured to the frame and one to the base. Secured to the rear of frame C is a bracket G, carrying a platform H, which swings with frame O, adapted, when the frame is in raised position, to act as a support for the ticket-blank while being placed in position to be torn, and to swing down and away from the opening when the frame is lowered. To insure tickets being placed in the same position relative to the cutting edges, I mount guides I upon a base A, extending over opening a above the level of the platform, and adapted to receive the edges of the tickets and hold them in position.
Suppose an agent wishes to issue a ticket bearing date of March 10, 1896. The blank shown in Fig. 3 is placed on the base over the platform H and against guides I. The frame is swung downward until the cutting edges of the straight-edges are upon the blank. l Straight-edge D is adjusted on frame O until cutting edge d2 is under 1896, in the first column, and is then locked in position by thumb-nut d. Straight-edge D' is adj usted along frame C until cutting edge d2 is under Mar. in the second column, and is locked to frame C, the same as D. Straightedge D2 is adjusted on frame C until cutting edge d2 is under l0 in the third column, and is locked to the frame the same as the others. The ticket is then torn from the blank and has a step-like margin on one side, the year, month, and day of the month be- IOO ing indicated on successive steps. The remainder of the blank falls into the opening and constitutes a record of the ticket issued.
The device may be used for issuing reeeipts, tiokets, dao. and as many straight-edges may be used as required.
I elairn as my invention*- l. In a ticketissuing device the combination with a suitable base, of a swinging frame, and a series of overlapping straightedges adjustable on the frame and having their cutting` edges in the same plane, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a ticket-issuing device the combina tion with a suitable base of a swinging frame, a series of overlapping straightedges adjustable on the frame and having their cutting edges in the same plane, and spring or springs adapted to normally hold the frame in a raised position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a ticket-issuing device the combination of a table a slotted frame pivoted thereto and Carrying a series of adjustable and overlapping straightedges, an opening in the table and a platform carried by the frame adapted to swing into the opening` when the frame is raised and away from the opening when the frame is lowered, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
et. The combination in a ticket-issuing,` deviee of a table a slotted frame pivoted thereto and Carrying a series of adjustable and overlapping straight-edges, en opening` in the ra ble, a platform Carried bythe frame adapted to swing into the opening when the frame is raised and away from the opening when the frame is lowered, and guides adapted to hold each ticket in the same position relative to the cutting edges, substantially as and i'or the purpose set forth.
