C. TOLLNBR BOX FASTENER.
No. 564,661. Patented July 28, 1896.

WI TNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES TOLLNER, OF PULASKI, NEW YORK.
BOX-FASTENER.
STECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 564,661, dated July 28, 1896. Application filed April 14, 1896. Serial No. 587,508. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES TOLLNER, a resident of Pulaski, Oswego county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bones, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes. The particular object of my invention is to combine a box and a catch together in such a manner that the boxes may readily be-packed in larger boxes, the catch taking up very little room and being countersunk into the box so as to be substantially flush with the wall of the box.
To these ends my invention consists in the herein-described combination and arrange ment of box and catch, as specifically pointed out and claimed.
My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front or face view of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box, the cover being raised. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the latch portion of the catch.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the box, and B the top thereof. The front wall of the body of the box is recessed, as at O, which recess is covered by a plate 1), which is provided with a nib or spur E, directed into the countersunk portion of the wall. The front wall of the top of the box is countersunk, as at F, and receives a latch, which is shown as consisting of a metallic body G, bent back on itself at 1 and terminating at one end in a knob 2 and at the other in a supporting-plate 3, which coincides with the arm 4 of the latch, and is bent at 5 6 '7 8 to form sinuous wings 9 10, as will be clearly apparent from an inspection of Fig. 4. These wings, or rather the ends 12 13 thereof, rest upon the front face of the front wall of the top of the box, and are held thereto by suitable tacks 14 15, which pass through a plate H, perforated for The latch G is apertured at I for the reception of the nib or spur E of the counterplate D.
What I claim, and ters Patent, is
A box comprising a body portion A and a cover B, a Wall of the said body portion being recessed as at O, which recess is adapted to receive the lower bent end of a latch and is covered by a plate D provided with a nib E struck up therefrom, a wall of the said cover B being recessed and receiving a latch comprising a body G bent upon itself at 1, terminating at the free end in a knob 2, and at the other end in a headbent at 5, 6, 7, 8, to form wings 12, 13, the said wings projecting out of the recess in the top of the box and resting against the face of the recessed wall and provided with apertures therein for securing the latch to the box-cover, and with an aperture I between the knob 2 and the bent end of the catch for engagement with the nib E, and a separate covering-plate H apertured for the passage of the knob 2 and having perforations therein which coincide with the perforations in the latch, whereby the fasteningscrews may pass through both the latch and the covering-plate to secure the parts in place.
