Description
(No Model.) l
G. A. MOLTZ.
BOX STRAP.
Patented July 21,1896,
IEIIIIP" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ANDREW MOLTZ, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE TWISTED WIRE BOX STRAP COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,569, dated July 21, 1896.
Application filed March 2, 1896. Serial No. 581,451. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ANDREW MOLTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Straps; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in straps for boxes, crates, &c., and has for its object to provide a strap which by its construction shall act to guide the nail to the center of the strap, thereby to prevent the accidental driving of the nail into the goods contained in the case, and also to provide means whereby the strap shall act when driven on sides of case to bind said case together. I
My invention consists in providing the strap with a series of cuts or indentations radiating toward a common center and of greater depth at the meeting-point, forming a guide to direct the nail to the proper place to engage the box.
It further consists in curving the edges of the strap in such manner that said edges shall engage the material of which the box or crate is composed and act to bind the case together, all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case, showing my improved strap applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a strap. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 00 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a modification of the form of indentations.
The strap A may be made of any desired width or length and is provided with a series of depressionsA, and each depression is provided with a series of indentations radiating from the edges of the strap and from the adjacent depressions to a common center, as shown at a, the meeting-point, if found desirable, being perforated for the passage of the nail, as shown at a. These indentations a may be made at right angles to each other and at angles to the edges of the strap, so that they shall cross each other centrally of the strap, the surfaces between the indenta- 5o tions and the indentations acting to guide the nail toward the center and insure its entrance at the proper point. If desired, however, a series of grooves may be indented radiating from the edges of the strap and from the ad jacent series to a common center, as shown in Fig. 4, the object in all cases being to provide means, as before stated, to guide the nail or other fastening device to the proper point in amanner and for ,a purpose that will be readily understood.
The edges of the strap are made in curved form, so that when the strap is applied to the case said edges shall engage the material of which the box or crate is composed and bind such case together.
Various modifications may be made in the construction of the indentations so long as the sameshall radiate to a common center and, as before stated, act to guide the nail or other fastening device to the proper point.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A strap for securing boxes, crates, &c.,
provided with a series of depressions, each depression provided with a series of indentations radiating from the edges of the strap and the adjacent depressions to a common center, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A strap for securing boxes, crates, &c., provided with a series of depressions each provided with a series of indentations crossing each other and made deeper at the cross- 8 5
