Description
Uisfrrn *terne iifrrnirir @einem EL P, EWBNKS AND H. M. VVEL, F LEES-GLN, ILLL'NOIS.
' kTo vili 'whom 'it 'muy concern.:
Be it known that we, Elim `P. hEWeiiNris and E. M..POWEL, of Ln'eon, in the county of *Logan and State oiflllinois, have invented oertain new and useful Improvements iu Builders and Painters Sceolds; and We do hereby declare tbat'the following is u full, clear, und exact description of the saine, reference being 'inedito the accompanying drnnfings, nud tothe letters of referenee marked thereon.
In the ,annexeddrawings,` making part of this speiieation, A represents the scaffold.
board upon which the operator stands.'
Cjfrepresent lWires which have their ends ggen-ielfestened neer the ends of 'the board A, said wireslying'nndertne boerd, es shown.; B represent short boards or blocks, which re hinged on the under. side of the board A at suitable distances apart. Willen these short boards are turned et right ongles t0 the scat'- fold-bonrd A they beur against the Wires C, and serve to brute Iand support said seetihldboard', so thnt it will support the required weight upon it. In makingthe hou-rd A longer than required for ordinary use it muy he hinged at the center. -The ends of the board A, upon their under side, are provided with sinn-ll pins, which are intended to stick into the platform which sustains it, to prevent it from slippiuf. The brackets which forni theplatform for supportingrthe scatbld-bonr'd are mede as follows; lVe take e piece of timber of the required width'and, lengthsey, or eight inches Wide endnfroni two to three feet long'- and frame inte-iti' n erm, E, and this arm we support lo); meusot'two braces, F F, running' from outer ,end et'. theerni-ctolthe lewereod..
lofth'efpiece Rivoted in the timber D are, four-'smell`roliers,'m m, with their peripheries p'ojeotingbeyoud the timber, as shown. These rollers are covered with rubber or some simi- 1er materiel. The timber D stands in' n vertical position, and the rollers m m rest against the Walls of the' house, their covering preventing defeoing. There are two of these bra-ckl ets,one for each end ofthe board The hoord of' the brneets.
G :nui H represent the supports for these brackets. These supports nre made. of two pieces of senntlinguvhieh are held together by'menns of the metallic collars K K, the seid cellars beingmede inst to vone of the pieces, and the otheinpieoe sliding` through the loop which they 'orm. q
To the lower pieee, H, is secured n Windluss with e ratchet-wheel and pztwl uttnehed. A oord passes around this Windlase up the outside of piece H, then around e pulley, o, in its upper end, thence down e groove on its inner side, and secures to thelnwer end of the piece G. By this cord lund. windluss the piece G is easily raised und lowered or stationed in :my desired position. The upper end oi' piece G rests in an opening; mede to receive it et vthe intersection of the nrni E with the timber D, passing to said opening between the two braces F F.
In using` this scaffold. the brace H is placed nt e bracingl :ingle tothe house, find the breekets with the seniiold board upon then-'i are raised end-lowered, orstutioned where required, by menus of the u'indless with its' powi und ratchet-wheel.
The brackets with their rollers eusiiy run up and down the sides of the house without defncing it.
Hering thus fully described our invention, what we clrnin new, end desire to secure by Letters Patent, iis- The brackets constructed. in combination with the seebld-hourd A nud braces H und Q,the saine being used substantially in lthe 'manner and for the purpose herein specified.
As evidence that We claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands in th@ presence of tiro Witnesses.
rest upon the 'arms E E ELI P. NEVBANKS. HXVARDjM. PCi/VEL.
Vitnesses G. H. GAMrBELL,
SAMUEL Tre'rmns.
