Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
MARY E. HURLEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLES FOR CANING CHAIRS.
Speciteation forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,421, dated July 17, 1866.
To all whom it' may' concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. HURLEY, of the city and county of Baltimore, in the State ot' Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Needle for Caning Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in hav ing an eye in the front or bent end ofthe needle, through which to insert the strip of cane used for making the seats of chairs or for other similar pnrposes, the object being to greatly facilitate and cheapen the labor ot' such work.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
In the dra-wings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my needle; Fig. a side or perspective View ot' lthe same, showing the eye in the bent forward part. Fig. 3 shows the old 0r connuonly-used needle. This latter is lnerely used as an opener and guide, the cane being inserted and guided in making the meshes by the hand and fingers. This is tedious and laborious.
In using my needle, by means of its eye, and inserting the cane through it beforehand, while pushing (or pulling) it through the partlywoven seat, (as you would the old needle) you are at the same time carrying the cane with it, completing the operation, as it were, at once, and all weaving of the cane by the lingers is thus dispensed with, time and expense saved, requiring little if any more labor than that of inserting the old bent-pointed needle rwithout the eye, which is not even half the old process.-
It is not absolutely necessary that the front end of the needle should be bent.
The eye of my tool (instrument or needle) is indicated in Figs. l and 2 by a red arrow.
In the drawings, A represents the tool or needle, B its handle, a the front end of tool, and b the eye through the same in which the cane is inserted, the arrow and b indicating the same opening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A needle, A, for caning chairs, having au eye, b, through the front end, a, constructed and operating substantially as shown and described, andt'or the purpose set forth.
MARY E. HURLEY.
