CLEANER FOR SPINNING-RING TRAVELERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,087, dated July 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KNIGHT, of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cleaners for Spinning-Ring Travelers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

It has heretofore been found difficult to V properly apply traveler-cleaners for spinningrings either to the ring-holder or to the ringrail, and in the various devices heretofore proposed for accomplishing the desired object it has been necessary sometimes to make the ring itself of a different form or to use other expensive mechanical means.

This invention has for its object the production of a simple and efficient travelercleaner and the means for applying and retaining it securely in place, as will be hereinafter described in the specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1, in elevation, represents a spinning-ring and ring-holder with the travelercleaner applied thereto in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the ring-holder and the traveler-cleaner, the ring being omitted; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line m m, Fig. 2.

The spinning-ring a may be of any desirable construction, and is herein shown as provided with top and bottom flanges a and c respectively. a preferably split or expansible ring, having an annular flange 19, shouldered at 6 to receive the lower flange of the spinning-ring, and having in its upper face an annular groove or recess 5 over which the lower ringflange a extends when held in the holder. \Vhen the ring is inserted, the holder 1) is sprung or expanded sufficiently to receive it, and its resiliency, when released, grips the lower flange of and holds the ring firmly in place.

clean the traveler, the remainder of the wire being shown in Fig. 3 as circularly curved at c to enter thegroove b in the top of the holder. The upturned end 0 of the cleaner projects through the opening b between the ends of the holder 1), (see Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive,) and preferably the said ends are beveled and non-radial, as shown best in Fig. 3.

When the cleaner is in place, as shown in Fig. 3, the spinning-ring is applied to the ring-holder b, and rests on the extended end or base 0 of the cleaner, retaining it firmly in place, and by preferably making the curved base 0 greater than one hundred and eighty degrees it cannot be pulled out of the holder, so that there is no liability of its accidental removal.

The ring-holder may be made continuous, if desired, and circumferentially slotted at its upper side to admit the end of the traveler-cleanenwithout departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

I claim 1. A spinning ring, and an expansible non-radially-slotted annular holder therefor adapted to clamp the ring, combined with a traveler-cleaner consisting of a piece of wire bent to form a circularly-curved base held throughout its extent between the holder and the foot of the ring, and upturned at its end and extended through the non-radial slot in the ring-holder, substantially as described.
